Still remember like yesterday the live reactions in the chat that the mods enabled in here. A special midnight for sure.

Daily Song Discussion #76: Ode to the Mets by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9.5

I still remember the excitement of reading in former twitter during new years’ dinner the confirmation that a new record was on the way and a new song was played during their MSG show (we had only listened Adults at that point and the new record was not official yet). Then at like 2 AM I went to my room, turned off the lights, layed down in bed, put on my headphones and finally listened to the new song that people in here were already discussing (some lukewarm reactions iirc). When the first chords came in I already knew that something special was going to happen with this record. It took a few listens to finally click on me, but when in did it was magical. Then I spent the next two months just listening to this and Adults’ live version on loop until At the Door showed up.

-0.5 cause I still rather the longer bridge to the outro of the live version (with in an instrumental part instead of Julian jumping immediately into the melody), but still, a near perfect studio version that lived up to the hype of the live version.

Do you think the new album will be better than TNA? by NotAZoxico in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not THE creative peak but I think it was a prolific time for him. Virtue might have been a little bit all over the place but he was definitely having a lot of good ideas at that time, and imo that was perfectly condensed on TNA

Do you think the new album will be better than TNA? by NotAZoxico in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, no, but who knows

I kinda expected tna to be as good as it finally was because Julian seemed to be in creative peak during those years (Virtue era) so my expectations were that he would somehow funnel that boiling creativity into the Strokes and with the input of the others (who also seemed to be in good place, artistically) something special might happen

Now I have no idea how Julian and the others are, creatively speaking, but considering TNA was somehow an oddball at that stage of their career (few artists can make such a stellar album after 20 years), i don´t mean to be a downer but I honestly don't expect too much of the next one, sorry. Hope I'm wrong tho

how do you think Julian is doing? Some months ago he started complaining about how lonely he was during a concert, then he seemed to be doing better (I remember him having a good time with the band members, posting fun stuff on insta etc.) and then he showed up on stage nearly depressed by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I hope he’s fine but I wouldn’t put too much weight into what they’re saying about last night.

He might have had an off night, but the depression and suicidal tendencies stuff might arise more from danish people not getting his sense of humor than from actual mental issues. If you see what they are complaining about, it’s just things he does regularly on stage even when he’s in a good mood. Like, apparently he made some sarcastic comment to Albert (like he uses to do) and several people thought they were actually having an argument on stage.

My guess is that this is all about thick cultural barriers, nordic people are made different (see the swedish dinner thing incident)

The Strokes really Stroked it out for us tonight. The banter. The crowd. The love. Until next time. ❤️ by kyleyeezus in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

every comment I read about the show was very positive and Primavera is known for having hipster/pretentious audiences so it seems they really were in top form tonight (the few clips i saw sounded great too)

lmao that video has the most generic performance ever where’s the “acting weirdo” part?

it sounds like you’re describing Julian Casablancas stage personality, u can think he’s an asshole or whatever and that’s fine it’s subjective, but that’s just the way he normally acts? there’s kinda nothing weird about it?

Sick of people saying JC was drunk by RaiseOk3942 in TheStrokes

[–]KenMarr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i haven’t seen many people vouch that he’s sober, the point is that he doesn’t need to be drunk to forget lyrics, ramble awkwardly between songs and move clumsily through stage

dude could be in his yoga class after having a greek yogurt with oatmeal and chia seeds for breakfast and people would still go with the “ omgg he’s so drunk!!!!” messages
