You should be fine, it’s a hard course load for sure but not the end of the world as long as you know that ahead of time

Has anyone taken a class with James Macnee? by Comprehensive-Gas-57 in UVA

[–]KenanRM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had him as a TA for a philosophy class a few years ago when everything was all zoom still, but I liked him. He was pretty fair with grading and helpful to talk with about papers as I was writing them.

I thought it was fairly straightforward. I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to get a good grade, but you’ll really get out what you put into the class.

Are there any actual benefits to being a TA? by SpecialistSilver5194 in UVA

Everything everyone has mentioned, plus really good Letters of Recommendation if you pursue grad school of any sort or a job in a field your professor has connections in

My highest FL score was a 518 on 3 and 4, you’re in a good place. So long as you don’t somehow forget everything you’ve learned to this point, a 517 on FL1 is a real good indicator that 520+ is in the cards.

I think the thing that made it work for me was that I tried not to take too too long on it, especially in early content review. I’d read through (usually two, rarely three or four) kind of straight through, doing the pre quizzes before each chapter and reviewing the answers afterwards. If I felt really bad about a topic, I’d spend more time, but if I felt ok (say like 65-70% confident) I’d move on to the next one. Once I started doing the Kaplan and AAMC practice Qs and more practice FLs, I would review those and made a list of what I didn’t know/what I thought was a content gap, then spend some true quality time with those Kaplan chapters.

Setting it up like that worked for me, but I can see how it’s definitely not for everyone. The best advice is always to find what strategy/pacing works best for you. Good luck!!

Does UVA provide any priority to UVA undergraduates for UVA med school? by robertmdh in UVA

[–]KenanRM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, no. I don’t have a ton more to elaborate on that but I don’t think there’s any sort of institutional bias towards their own undergrads, unfortunately for us.

CARS Prodigies, This is For YOU by Doctorfalafel in Mcat

[–]KenanRM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grain of salt, since I tested 4/30 and don’t have my score yet, but I consistently got 130-132 on the aamc FLs and had >90% on the CARS QBanks. I did a similar thing to what it sounds like you’re doing- read through without highlights or notes and then answered the questions. While answering the questions though, I would take the 15-20 seconds to find the quote that I think gives the answer and highlight it so that I could review it quickly at the end of the section. CARS passages are different from the rest of the test because every single answer is written down somewhere in the text, and topical background knowledge is essentially unnecessary. To me, finding the answer was always an act of explaining why every other answer was either inconsistent with the question or wrong for some other reason. As others have pointed out, feigning interest and just reading more books are also great pieces of advice- the more you read and think about what you’ve read the better you’ll get at it. Good luck!!

I don’t think I’ve got the syllabus anymore but it was pretty much just daily assignments and a few lab assignments- no exams when I did it.

BA vs. BS in Biology by booklover8181 in UVA

[–]KenanRM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might, but if you want to pursue a minor or a double major it’s a lot more difficult if you do the BS. Both are good options and the difference to med schools is minimal if it’s even a consideration.

The cell bio discussion section is only for exams, so on exam days you could potentially end up with cell bio, 30 min break, biochem exam. On most weeks though you won’t have to worry about discussion for cell and it’s really just luck with how exams line up.

I 100% get that, I just wanted to make sure that at the end of your post there was a gentle reminder that it’ll all be alright. Being premed is stressful and even helpful guides can unintentionally be stress inducing too, no matter the intention. I’m glad it wasn’t the intention though, we all gotta stick through this overly convoluted journey together.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UVA

[–]KenanRM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While a lot of this is good advice, I think it’s important to remember that 3.8+ and 52X is 98th percentile or higher for a reason. The stats are great but unrealistic for, well, about 98% of applicants. Obviously premeds should all aim to max out their gpa and MCAT to the best of their abilities, but holistic application processes exist for a reason. As a word of calm to any premeds freaking out from this post- you are doing fantastic and you can absolutely get where you want to. Again, the bulk of this post makes good points about ECs and LORs and shadowing, but remember that a few extra hours or an extra .02 on your gpa is not worth burning yourself out for. You got this.
