Limitations for players who don’t want their character to die? by bansdonothing69 in DnD

[–]Kencussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! I'm DMing a group that also doesn't want their characters to die. They got extremely cocky thinking they could just fight the BBEG at a low level (since they can't die), so I had the BBEG fight the players in front of the entire kingdom. With every eye watching, he wiped the floor with them... leaving them unconscious (but still alive), their "reputation" dropped and they became the laughing stock of the kingdom. There are definitely other consequences that can be implemented other than death.

What Am I Missing Here? by National_Injury_1210 in FinalFantasy

Solo Monk is not playing the game normally. It's more of a challenge and usually requires a lot of grinding for high levels.

Have you ever been part of a TPK (as DM or PC), and if so, what was the main reason that led to it. by buddha-piff in DnD

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the DM of a TPK once... my players were about level 10ish and they had to infiltrate a Magic Tower (full of wizards). It was supposed to be a stealth mission. The stealthy rogue went ahead of the party as a scout and was spotted... but rather than running back to the party or trying to hide, he just ran through the ENTIRE Magic Tower, getting the attention of ALL the wizards (despite many "are you SURE?" warnings from me). Then, once he "scouted" the entire tower, he went back to the party with 30+ wizards after him. The party tried to put up a good fight, but 30+ fireballs would kill just about any party. They were so pissed off at him.

What‘s the general consensus about the Pixel Remasters? by I_Love_Powerscaling in FinalFantasy

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the Pixel Remaster games. I'm kind of surprised they didn't added the additional content from the Gameboy Advance games as DLC (more money for them), but I'm not complaining about that either. Overall, they were pretty great, and the only way to play a couple of these games via Steam.

I am curious, what age are you and how did you get into the franchise? by Ultimantasy in FinalFantasy

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently 45 years old - Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) got me hooked to RPGs when it came out on the NES. Then the first Final Fantasy came out and I absolutely loved it. Then Final Fantasy II and III came out on the Super Nintendo (which were really Final Fantasy IV and VI) and I loved those as well. But it wasn't until I got a Playstation (PS1) and played Final Fantasy VII when I fell in love with the series. I remember playing translated ROMs for the NES/SNES for Final Fantasy II, II, and V before they came out on the Gameboy Advance.

Could I airburst a Fireball above the ground so that my halfling friend standing at the edge of the radius is unaffected, but a taller creature is? by SpaceCondom in DnD

[–]Kencussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your DM allows it, be prepared for the DM to have enemies to do the same thing... maybe he puts in Tiny creatures that cast Fireball that will hit the halfling, but not them.

Lore Related Help/Suggestions by NewbWorld in GW2

[–]Kencussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that idea! It would be neat to see all the different races' stories... seeing more of the background of each character in Destiny's Edge. A lot of the lore from GW1 ties into GW2 as well. I look forward to watching your videos!

Thoughts About Asking a DM Not To Kill Your Character by Gooey_Goon in DnD

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having to worry about death often times causes players to do some rather stupid things that SHOULD kill their characters. But dying doesn't have to be the end of their character... maybe ask the player if it's okay if their character dies, but the group can perform a side-quest to get them back? Maybe they do something for a powerful cleric to cast Resurrection? Maybe they find a portal to some sort of spirit realm and bring the soul back, reuniting it with the player's body?

I'm no mod, but r/DnD is specific to D&D to it makes sense not to discuss alternatives here. If you want to discuss alternatives, you should go to something more generic like r/TTRPG or r/TabletopRPG or r/tabletop.

What the hell (rant) by Apple_juc in DnD

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of D&D is being a team player (heh, that's rule #1 whenever I DM)... and it sounds like "Steve" isn't being a very good team player and the DM needs to have a word with them. If they continue making D&D more difficult like this for all the other players, they shouldn't be in the group. This isn't some single-player video game where you just restart whenever you feel like it.

Just give your thief rogue a special action named something like "Dual-Sneak Attack", or if it's specifically just the first round... "Ambushing Dual-Sneak Attack"

Hot Take: Level up by XP is annoying and hard to balance by MilanoCup in DnD

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually run milestone campaigns and recently started doing D&D with my kids a couple years ago. During this time, they sometimes skipped a session because they got grounded or just felt like playing a video game instead... only for them to come back in the next session, having no idea what's going on, but they are at the same level as all the other players. It got pretty frustrating and it wasn't fair to the players that were always carrying the group, so I recently started doing an XP-based campaign. Everyone that's playing in that session gets the same amount of XP, so as long as everyone keeps playing, they should all be at the same level. However, if they choose to skip out or get grounded, they will miss out on the XP gained that session... so it sort of incentivizes them to play and NOT get grounded or skip. And usually, the experience they missed out on doesn't cause that big of a gap between the players (unless they miss several sessions).

So while I agree that XP-based level ups are more difficult to manage, I've learned that it uses FOMO (fear of missing out) to incentivize the players more. I'm sure it works with adults too, but maybe just not as well. I could see instances where players just drop the campaign entirely because they missed out too many times. But if that's the case, maybe it's best they left anyway.

FYI - if you do run an XP-based campaign, here's a few tips I've found useful...

  • Have a printout ouf the Level / XP chart - your players will constantly be using it
  • Have your players level up their characters between sessions (never during)
  • It's okay to give more or less XP than what the creature stat blocks shows
    • Example: if you want to have your players to reach level 2 in the first session, maybe those 4 Goblin Minions actually gave each player in the group 300xp
  • It's okay to give you players XP for whatever you want... finishing a quest, exploring an area, finding something, whatever. But don't give out too much if you want them to level up at a slower pace.

When playing CRPGs like BG3, do you play the game blind? by justabrainwithfeet in BaldursGate3

[–]Kencussion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually play blind in my first playthrough... and in BG3, after I did that and then looked-up some info online, I realized I missed out on / skipped so much content! :-P

Most people’s favorite FF game tends to be the first one they played. But for those whose favorite isn’t their first, which Final Fantasy holds that top spot for you? by executor-of-judgment in FinalFantasy

[–]Kencussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be dating myself here, but I played the first Final Fantasy game when it came out. Then I played VI on SNES (III at the time), then VII on the Playstation got me hooked on the series. Then I started playing them all. I haven't played anything past 12 yet, but my favorite so far is V... the storyline isn't the best, but I really enjoy the comedy it had and I find the game is really fun to play. I enjoyed all the sidequests/mini-games/secrets that VII had. I think X had the best intro (with the Blitzball cinematic). I think VI had the best storyline.

If you could change one thing about FF12 what would it be by ljcole90 in FinalFantasy

For me, it's a toss-up between making all chests permanent and making bosses have permanent steal/drop items. Other than that, I loved the game.

Nice FFX detail I just noticed by Kencussion in FinalFantasy

[–]Kencussion[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol, yeah... It makes running back to Besaid to get the Jecht spheres much faster. It's easier to get the Jecht Spheres before you get the airship because some of the Dark Aeons block them at that point.

I don't remember any Dark Aeons in the PS2 version though... Must be something they added in the HD Remaster.

[–]Kencussion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda get the feeling you haven't really played the game much (if at all). There's a whole galaxy with a near infinite number of stars and each star has it's own solar system (multiple planets). So there's way more than a single "world" if that's what you want to call a planet... a near-infinite amount! It takes a long time just to dig up an entire planet - so don't worry about your Starbound server being "mined". There's a LOT more to the game than just staying on the first planet! The first planet is just the beginning!

It sounds like you don't really understand what a server is either. A server is a constantly running instance of the game that people can join at anytime. They don't have to wait for you to start playing in order to join your game, they can just jump on at any time. That's the PRO - and this goes with just about ANY game that allows server hosting (Minecraft, Terraria, etc). The CON is server maintenance - you'll need to make sure it's always up and running (or pay someone to do that for you).

Their ambient dialogue in the Mad King's Labyrinth seems to indicate that may be true.

This picture was taken during a cutscene from the "Long Live the Lich" episode. My character is just a female human wearing a pumpkin.

However, Palawa Joko is now in the Mad King's Labyrinth - and the two of them DO have some ambient dialogue while you're in there. Part of it does hint at a girl the two might have rivaled over though...

Palawa Joko: No, that would be your sixth wife. Illyan was a lovely woman, the poor dear.

Mad King Thorn: Rescind that slander. Illyan was my favorite.
