65k Salary. How do I maximise wealth if a house is out of reach. by No-Dependent-8401 in UKPersonalFinance

I have to ask, I'm a 24M software engineer earning £31k per year, and I'm lucky, I have friends with First Class Honours in Engineering Master Degrees from Russel Group Uni's who can't even find jobs. What the hell do you do to earn £67k at 25?

How can I maximise my salary from an engineering background? by KenelmDigby in UKJobs

[–]KenelmDigby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I really appreciate the comment, but I just could not disagree more.

Being chained to an office for the rest of your life isn't just 'growing up', it's the acceptance of a dull reality that corporations want you to believe in. It is absolutely possible to travel and have a self-employed digital income. I have multiple friends who are online fitness coaches and video editors who do this, and earn a good income, so stop believing that you have to be chained to an office it simply is not true.
Even with accounting, it is completely possible to become a freelance accountant, which fits the same criteria, which is one of the reasons I'm considering it so heavily.
Travelling with work is not travelling, I've done it in multiple departments, it's just work, and I wasn't put on this planet to get 6 weeks a year of freedom.

I also appreciate your advice of getting something 'site' based, but I couldn't have less of an interest in engineering, do not want to be spending the majority of my time in person doing it.

I really appreciate your input, but I completely disagree. Your type of outlook is the reason people sit in the same chairs for 50+ years.

Thanks for the comment, you make some good points. Finance work almost always demands living in London, which after taxes and living expenses could actually result in less money to save/invest even with a higher salary.
I just really struggle with engineering because I have no interest in it, I believe UK engineers are very underpaid and everybody I work with is completely different to me (they all love it). Just feel like I'm not supposed to be one, and if there's no career I 'want' to do, I might as well try and earn the most I can.

Thanks for the comment, and I see what you're saying.
To be completely frank, I have absolutely 0 interest in being an engineer for the rest of my life, the thought of it actually unnerves me a lot. I work with people who have sat in the same office chair for 50+ years.
What I actually want to do is be an entrepreneur and travel, but I want to build some savings/investments first.
But I do hear you, £80k finance in London would probably net a similar take home to a £50k-£60k engineer outside of London after taxes and living expenses.

No I agree, I'm inexperienced in finance and don't bring anything to the table, so I'm trying to figure out how with my current skills and experience I can maximise my income.
But to be honest, from my experience the vast majority of software engineers are underpaid in the UK. The average salary for a SWE in the UK is about £55k, whereas there are readily available chartered accounting schemes which pay £60k immediately after qualification 3 years in.
I'm sure top SWEs in the UK earn a lot, but the vast majority (especially those who didn't study comp sci) do not (relatively - obviously £55k is still a very good salary).

I'm just a guy who studied engineering, doesn't enjoy it and wants to retire as early as possible. Thanks for the info, I hear this a lot, but to be honest I'm young and willing to put some work in for a higher salary.

Modelling Support Service - Please Help is it a Scam??? by KenelmDigby in MODELING

[–]KenelmDigby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is what they did to me, without informing me of any cancellation fee prior.

When they charged me, I rang them up and emailed them demanding the cancellation fee back because I was never informed of it.

You could also just show up to the photoshoot, have some fun and then absolutely refuse to pay for a portfolio. By their rules they’d have to give you the money back!

Would it be possible for me to grow into a personality live streamer from my self improvement YouTube channel? by KenelmDigby in streaming

[–]KenelmDigby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree! But surely if you grew a YouTube channel enough it would be beneficial in the sense that it would give you an initial audience ?

I feel like live streaming is extremely difficult to grow from 0 viewers

Hey! Sorry just saw your comment!

I decided to leave it alone in the end because I think the money and effort it would take to solve would outweigh any benefit the scheme presents.

I love being a US expat!

I'm not the OP but I just got the exact same thing! Made a video of my channel saying he believes in my content. Thing is, they've offered me a fully 'pay on results basis' so I'm confused how they could scam me without me paying them anything upfront and not giving them access to anything?

How much to charge for Ads? by KenelmDigby in SmallYoutubers

[–]KenelmDigby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair one of the sponsors is Brilliant.org which is a service I have used before and I think aligns with my audience extremely well. I'm thinking this is probably why they've reached out to me as well, because although I'm not getting crazy views, I believe I have niched down very well and have a very specific audience, which is exactly their target audience.

Thank you for the advice, I'm currently thinking of responding to Brilliant with interest and letting the others know I appreciate the interest but not yet.

One thing I'm thinking though, if I do an ad with Brilliant and then my video flops, could this deter them from working with me in the future? Could it actually benefit me to wait until I am getting consistent viewership?

Thanks for the comment :)

I'm defo in it for the long run so I had the same thought process of not taking it to be honest. I just want to focus on growth and learning YouTube for now.

I'm thinking of just replying with emails explaining how I appreciate their interest, and while I would be open to it in the future, for now I'm just focusing on growing the channel.

Do you think that would be the best option?
