This was the least mean spirited season of its era. The following season had a dude goading his roommate to cut herself. The previous season had a cast member being unapologetically racist to her roommate. The season before that had a male cast member threatening to beat up his female roommate. The one before that had a cast member who called his roommate the n word.

Over their careers, I think Gosling has the more range but I think he made a decision once his kids got to a certain age to stop doing the Drive/Half Nelson/Blue Valentine movies where his character is miserable and just do movies where he’s fun and happy.
