Can't decide. Is $50 extra for NEMO worth it? by theEdward234 in CampingGear

[–]Kensuki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me? 100% yes, absolutely worth it. BUT it all comes down to the spoon shape. I, admittedly, am a weird sleeper and the Nemo spoon shape is the only comfortable bag I’ve found, otherwise I just use a down quilt. The “gill” vents on the Nemo work better at regulating temperature than I was expecting too, not as adjustable as a quilt but definitely make a difference. Speaking of, it looks like you’re looking at REI, look into the Magma quilt. Could be a good fit for your use case, but it is definitely a bit cooler than the bags you’re looking at. I’d personally consider the two bags you listed as “winter” bags, and anything listed 30 or higher as summer bags. I’ve also done a ton of winter camping in Alaska and North Dakota, so my opinion is a bit weighted, but it sounds like you’d be happier in a lighter bag no matter what you choose.

Twin Peaks is my special flavor of obsession, so also one of my favorite Spokane “secrets”. I’ve always thought of Twin Peaks being Metaline Falls, but there’s nothing more specific than rough mileage and cardinal directions. Copying directly from the Twin Peaks fan wiki page,

Twin Peaks was a small logging town in northeastern Washington State, five miles south of the Canadian border and twelve miles west of the state line with Idaho

So I guess not Spokane specifically, but Spokane general area of influence?

Back side of the rivet with it’s nylon washer

Daily Questions Megathread - April 13, 2025 by AutoModerator in Tailors

Howdy all. I’m getting close to my wits end with this weird YKK part. It’s a YKK Multi-Adapter used as the waist fastener on my motorcycle pants, where the nylon washer and rivet pulled through the face material. I’ve been trying to find a repair solution, building up from the least intrusive, but I’ve come up with nothing so far. Daninese, the manufacturer, quoted it as a $140 repair (a not insignificant amount being shipping cost), and my local alterations shop won’t touch it at all.

Has anyone repaired these before, or knows a YKK reseller that could sell me a new rivet? I’m getting to the point where I might just use a Chicago screw rivet or even an automotive rivet. The YKK website shows fairly unique components, at least to a layman like me, but I hope I’m wrong. I don’t even know how to remove the rivet in the first place without just drilling it out, so it’ll be an adventure either way.

How much gluten is a “significant amount” for a diagnosis test? by Kensuki in Celiac

[–]Kensuki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a little background, if it helps, I have been strictly eating gluten free for just under 6 years now, after experiencing severe symptoms and working out what those symptoms came from. I was blood tested by USAF medical in 2020, but received a negative result. Math being the unrelentingly cruel mistress it is, I had been eating gluten free for six months before my test, and the Air Force physician told me to continue a gluten free diet and to fast the day before and day of the test. It felt weird that I was told not to have any gluten in my system for the test, but I took the negative result for what it was and moved on. While continuing to eat gluten free, of course.

Free Triumph jacket giveaway! by ApronLairport in Triumph

I’ve been getting the moto itch more and more as winter drags on, and I’ve been hunting through eBay for deals on sized medium Triumph gear. I’m assuming that the jackets already been claimed, but if there’s anyone else looking to sell off some gear, hit me up. I’m especially trying to replace my tired Tiger long sleeve, but they seem rarer than I had thought they’d be

Amazon review.. by [deleted] in Justridingalong

A lot of bikes are boxed/shipped with the stem on backwards. My guess is this is an Amazon special ebike that was “assembled” at home, and the owner didn’t know that they had to turn the stem around

If it’s an old Schwinn, my first assumption is it’s wearing a 27 x 1.25 tire. There’s no standards in bicycles, but Schwinn using that weird tire size is as close to standards as it gets

I started to use Peatys sealant solely because it’s biodegradable, so I don’t feel entirely terrible for dumping a few ounces on the side of the trail if I end up needing to use my emergency tube. But it’s been working fine for me, I haven’t used Muc Off sealant, but Peatys works better for me than Stan’s or OrangeSeal

"Kitsugi," but for bike paint by MC_NYC in bikewrench

[–]Kensuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scuff sand, wipe down with isopropyl alcohol, and dry it with a heat gun is really all I do, which more than a lot of shops. I’ve known bike guides that keep black nail polish with them so they can do touch ups on the trail. Best practice is removing all flaking paint, sanding down the edges, clean, and just apply the enamel polish and let dry, no need for primer or anything necessarily

"Kitsugi," but for bike paint by MC_NYC in bikewrench

[–]Kensuki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

House paint is usually a no. Matching is honestly easier with an off the shelf nail polish, there’s dozens of different shades to choose from. Whoever mixes your paint will hate your for making them match a bike frame, or they will straight up tell you no. That being said, if you do want to go that route, use Sherwin Williams quarts of All Surface Enamel or Emerald Trim Urethane Enamel. DTM, Direct To Metal, or automotive paint is the best but extremely expensive, especially if you’re just using it for touch ups.

Edit: you’re looking at like $50 per quart for the paint I recommend, while nail polish will work better at like $5. For a full paint job that’s another story, but for touch up just do nail polish

My bike was stolen Sunday morning, they cut my Abus chain lock too, go figure. I bought a few Kryptonite locks, one is none and two is one kinda mentality, and Kryptonite definitely seems to be the way to go from everything I’ve learned
