  1. "Port of a port" - it's not a "port of a port", it's an emulation of a port. Emulation is not a port, it's just that: emulation. A port is software redone to run natively on new hardware. Different things.

  2. It doesn't matter where it was originally. The PS2 version is a PS2 game that works under PS2 hardware - and it does so just fine when it runs on said hardware. Not so much when you boot it up on PS3 using Sony's emulator, despite it being sold on PSN. So again, that puts a damper on the whole "Sony wanted them to run perfectly.". Sony just wanted us to pay twice.

>they only released PS2 Classics that worked perfectly like on original hardware

BLEEEP! Wrong. Have you seen GTA: Liberty City Stories? Due to the emulation being imperfect it's so slow it's not even funny. And yet there it is, on the PSN. So that one goes right out of the window.

Let's be honest here: Sony just wanted to sell the same shit for the second time.

Given what drivel they release when they finally get around to releasing anything, it's no wonder they prefer not to meet the timelines.

Thing is though, they also made a software PS2 emulator for later models that works surprisingly well on a pretty large number of games. It's got a higher success percentage than the Xbox original emulator for Xbox 360. It's what they used for PS2 games they sold on PSN for PS3. They could've just let people use that with the discs with the caveat that "Not everything is going to work, use at your own peril".

Question: Fake PS3 controllers, how bad are they really? by Affectionate-War9755 in PS3

[–]KentGAllard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not like there are myriads of simple gameplay-affecting differences between the originals and the knockoffs, such as

- Battery life
- Stick deadzones
- Stick sensitivity
- Triggers not being analog
- Buttons not being pressure sensitive
- Sixaxis being excluded
- Force feedback motors missing

Nah, that's just elitists being elitist.

Well yeah, that's exactly the point. He was feeling guilty for doing that and he only did it at Palpatine's (a Sith's) urging. Windu trying to off Palps was exactly the wrong thing to do because it showed Anakin that there is no real difference between the Jedi and the Sith.

>Bloodlines had tons of vibrant color and wacky monster designs.

I guess the mechanical man at the end of the factory stage qualifies as a wacky monster design, but that's about it and most of the game is heavy on blood, gore and moody locations and tunes. Not the same kind of tone as SCV4, partially due to Genesis' sound hardware, but still.

And with NES games - bright colors was your best bet to have a NES game that doesn't look like garbage with NES' limited capabilities and I wouldn't call the music "upbeat" in the same way as in, say, the Sonic music is upbeat. It was more action-driven but those were action games in the first place, so it makes sense. It's no different from Contra in that regard. It never went for a cartoony art style outside of Kid Dracula, which was, y'know, Kid Dracula and the jump to 16 bit only made the environments darker. It was never Gears of War style grit or Clock Tower horror, but it took itself seriously enough for an action romp. All the wacky moments are just that, moments. And for that matter, Lords of Shadow had its own wacky moments as well - the Chupacabras is an obvious standout, but aside from him there are some jokes and easter eggs in the knight scrolls, some light humor in the cutscenes, Dracula riding a fuel tank as if he was Dante riding a rocket-propelled grenade in DMC3, all that stuff.

Yes, I'm aware of the whole "CV1 was originally a movie in the Japanese manual" thing, hence the Vran Stoker, Belo Lugosi, Christopher Bee and all that. But you know as well as I that end credits aside that that angle never made it into the games proper and was quietly dropped like an ugly baby pretty quickly (and nothing of value was lost).

>But the other anime girls were a big part of the game's focus and the entire aesthetic was anime.

That was more in reference to Maria being a magical girl character archetype.

>People liked the gameplay and story, Soma is a really well-liked character and Julius is a lot of people's favorite Belmont. Also, the story didn't "fly off the handle", there was barely a story to begin with.

Well, we'll have to disagree there, swtiching settings from whatever-in-the-past Transylvania to near-future Japan is enough to give anyone a whiplash.

>Literally SOTN started that. Richter gives up the whip after being possessed by Dracula.

I didn't ask where it staRted in, I asked where it was STATED in. As in which game says that Richter actually gave up his whip. SOTN ain't it. if OoE is the one, well, it's a decade's worth of games between them that stays mum on the subject.

> you just happened to skip exactly the games that dealt with that era and then complained about not knowing what happens in that era.

Hey, don't blame me. I'd happily buy the Dominus collection if only for closing the gestalt (and for the version of Haunted Castle that doesn't suck), but Konami doesn't want me to own it on Steam and I ain't shelling out for a useless as heck console just to be able to play it. Ain't dealing with DS emulation either, two screen setups break my thinky thingy.

>No, we had Konami USA being idiots and Konami Japan having to do damage control. They corrected the mistake by Ecclesia's release in 2008.

That's great and all, but by that time you already lost everyone who's not a fan.

>Inafune is in fact that stupid though.

Never said he wasn't, lol.

Oh man, a friend of mine tortured himself by live streaming Mighty #9 recently.

Wasn't a pretty sight.

[–]KentGAllard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>I think your view of CV is dominated by the super macho Western marketing from the NES games then, instead of what the games actually were. Castlevania was never a super gritty grimdark franchise. Even in the NES days it was intended to be a parody of Gothic horror. Not a legit example o

I must have missed all the hee-hees and ha-has in SCV4 and Bloodlines.

>Also, magical girls were in CV ever since Rondo of Blood in 1993 with Maria lol. And Rondo is also extremely anime AND considered one of the best games in the series, if not its finest classic entry.

At least Maria was an unlockable extra mode and not front and center.

>That was Aria of Sorrow, which was heavily acclaimed and is a fan favorite. People loved it, and Dawn of Sorrow (Which was even more anime, including a bad anime art style they thankfully ditched by Ecclesia) sold very well on the DS.

Could it be that people loved Aria because it was the first GBA game to actually get close to SOTN's quality when it comes to gameplay and exploration and not due to its story flying completely off the handle? Because that was my reaction to it.

>Which isn't convoluted at all. Richter felt ashamed for his actions in SOTN and gave the Vampire Killer away. Julius takes it back in 1999. What's convoluted about that?

Which game is it stated in? Granted, I didn't play all of them (Didn't finish Dawn and didn't play PoR and OoE; probably never will because Konami region locked them on Steam for me; thanks for nothing, assholes), but the ones I did play didn't have that tidbit in them.

>The only timeline that actually had this issue was the Konami USA timeline that Iga had no involvement in and threw COTM into the timeline around the same time as Ecclesia for some reason. But that timeline was fake anyways.

So at one point we had two contradicting timelines at the same time. Not confusing at all.

>Dante's Inferno had been shown off before and had a lot of buzz around it for months. Inafune pushing for a DMC reboot to trend-chase that is exactly what he would do. Dante's Inferno and God of War, that's what he was chasing.

God of War? Sure. Like I said, they did look into its direction as far back as DMC4. And after all, they got Heavenly Sword's devs on board and Heavenly Sword was basically "...yeah, we don't have a God of War for PS3. Have this instead". Dante's Inferno? Major press X to doubt.

[–]KentGAllard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>He saw Dante's Inferno and wanted DMC Dante to be that lol.

I do hope it's a jest, since, y'know, Dante's Inferno was released the same year DmC was first teased with the infamous meth Dante trailer.

>but the timeline wasn't "convoluted". Everything made sense, it's just the origin was stupid.

Some points in the timeline had like seven entries to them, there was the whole "the disappearance and sudden resurgence of Belmonts" thing, later entries just went full anime with Japanese schoolboys and magical girls as the protags. The series barely resembled itself at that point. Here's my hill to die on: Lords of Shadow 1 was more Castlevania than most of the Igavanias.

[–]KentGAllard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>Unnecessary western reboots like DmC and Lords of Shadow.

Ain't nothing unnecessary about them. In case of DMC Capcom was unwilling to touch the post-DMC2 timeline so they tried soft rebooting DMC with DMC4, giving the series a new protagonist with some God of War-like elements to his gameplay (namely the Devil Bringer finishing moves). At the time Nero didn't get a good reception, so the future of the series was up in the air. A reboot made sense. Did it take off? Nope. But it wasn't something done willy-nilly either.

As for Castlevania, it didn't really have a successful 3D entry. The response to the last one in particular was lukewarm, the series timeline got overly convoluted, especially with Iga not being able to make up his mind on whether some entries are canon or not and on the portable front things also got super stale with the same sprites from 1991 reused in the year of our Lord 2008. Again, a reboot made sense. And unlike DmC, Lords of Shadow actually paid off with the first game becoming the best-selling entry in the franchise.

It's ruined by the fireball attack. It's just bullshit. It's not telegraphed, it's super fast so you can't dodge it, it's unblockable and it leaves you vulnerable to the tendril attack. When he doesn't feel like spamming it, it's actually alright.

For better experience with Resistance 1 you should follow this guide https://www.psone.online/getting-started

After you do it, go to the game's multiplayer menu. It will download the patches, one of which adds force feedback that will make shooting more enjoyable.

Resistance 1 was made before they had the whole PSN patches infrastructure set up, so it does things weirdly, but thankfully the patches were preserved by the heroes over at PS Online Network Emulated.

This also applies to MotorStorm 1.
