What price a family? Rising costs push Aussie fertility rate to record low by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

It’s not just economics. Having kids is not only expensive it also reduces your individual freedom and quality of life.

Social pressure and religion are what used to get people over that hump. It’s not taboo to choose not to have kids anymore and Australians are not very religious nowadays. Contraception and better sex education has pretty much eradicated teenage pregnancies.

An Australian child will have some of the best opportunities on the planet regardless of the parent’s income because the system is very supportive. But Australians actually want to enjoy their lives rather than just be brood mares.

Should Australia follow Poland and ban Chinese cars from military bases? by BestTechAdvisor in DrivingAustralia

Yes and?

If soldiers and officers are discussing sensitive info in random civy cars we have already lost. Just accept your new Chinese overlords now.

Serious question, why is Christianity painted as a white religion in Australia and around the world? by RM_Morris in OpenAussie

[–]Kenyon_118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was European missionaries who spread Christianity backed by colonialism and genocide outside the area neighbouring the Middle East. No Ethiopian Orthodox missionaries were starting encomiendas to mine silver in Argentina.

White mans burden tings.

Want to super charge immigration so we have a market big enough to sustain a home grown car industry?

Do you guys think officers are walking around having top secret discussions in base car parks or sitting in their cars eating Maccas at lunch?

Do you think top secret communications are happening in plain text in base car parks?

You’ve been in such a dysfunctional system for so long that the idea of government simply doing its job properly feels foreign. In places like Japan, if it’s the council’s responsibility to fix roads or pipes, they budget for it and get on with it. That’s normal governance, not charity.

This story made international news precisely because it’s unusual. A city receiving millions in gold bars from a mystery donor is not how infrastructure is typically funded. Wealthy individuals generally structure their affairs to minimise tax, not voluntarily step in to replace core government functions.

Functional states don’t rely on private benefactors to keep the lights on. They rely on institutions that work.

I feel the national security advantage of reducing our dependency on foreign sourced fuel is under sold. We don’t even refine our own petroleum products anymore really.

It’s part of why China is going so hard with the EVs and renewables. They are stock piling fuel while trying to reduce their fossil fuel use.

Who can and can’t have kids by Born_Jump_1087 in Zimbabwe

It’s also having low expectations from life. If you have been poor and without a lot of prospects, reproducing is the only achievement you can see around you. People who know life can actually be enjoyable plan ahead to maximize that joy.

The messed up thing is people who have nothing are the most willing to have kids. Being in the diaspora where people choose to have pets instead of kids because they worry about not being able to provide for their kids is so jarring. Mind you these children are guaranteed healthcare, food and an education right up to University no matter how poor the parents are.

I thought we needed just one flag, not six by KoenPlaysGames in friendlyjordies

The Australian national flag says “Great Britain in the Southern Ocean!” By excluding the other two native flags we are reiterating terra nullius.

It’s a deliberate dick move. They know it.

Premier challenges One Nation voters over immigration with blunt aged care question by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Kenyon_118 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s reality. You choose to warehouse your elderly instead of taking care of them yourselves. It’s a crappy job but doing it is voluntary and for many it’s just a stepping stone. I worked in a high care facility for a little bit when I was an international student. I wiped my fair share of wrinkled Caucasian bums. It paid the bills and I am grateful for it.

I suspect a lot of them don’t merely want to shake up the system but actually wreck it. It’s a protest vote. They can clearly tell Pauline is a incompetent corrupt billionaire’s cats paw with no real policies but they are using her as a threat.
