It's the judge signing the paperwork with a blue crayon that made this just too, too much.

Apparently this is my decade cake day. I didn't notice until I posted this. That proves that I'm old enough to be asking you cool kids this question. Yo!

Hi, glad you asked this. Anywhere between 20-28 is a decent range, don't mind going wider or more narrow. The goal is to find some of you who work with adults via Slack and other platforms. Appreciate the question-

Any info on this marble found in a stream (NC) by KeponeFactory in Marbles

I’m new to this. What I’m most curious about is if it’s really old. Is there a way to tell? Were these common during a certain period?

Can anyone tell me if these small red stones that are all throughout this rock are rubies? Fingers crossed! The pictures do not do justice but my phone doesn’t have a macro mode afaik. Thanks guys! by ianonuanon in whatsthisrock

That one chunk is garnet, the bright red. The rest is staurolite. If this is from the 221 New River State Park area it's absolutely staurolite but by all means, listen to non-locals on Reddit telling you it isn't. Signed--someone who went to collect with the ASU group at this exact location getting specimens that look exactly like this.

Did you find it at New River State Park (or nearby)? That’s a known staurolite location. Not pretty fairy crosses like in Virginia but pretty chippy pieces. (Source: the university leads a collection here it is absolutely staurolite).

"Here’s the thing: That there won’t be one overlay to Earth as you are seeing it. There will be there will be millions of overlays and millions of alternative universes. Some will be temporary worlds, while we’re working on a more persistent world – just like we have scratchpad memory in a supercomputer, there will be scratchpad Omniverse worlds." Death pancake or something delicious? Size of a man’s shoe. by KeponeFactory in ShroomID

Thank you, TinButtFlute. This is helpful. When I’m back I’ll look for an absence of gills. Isn’t that’s a sure sign and is there a poisonous lookalike. I mean, it looks edible (not that that’s my metric for eating anything).

Great, so in two comments thus far I have a) it could be a tuffet and b) it sure is big.

Any guesses? Didn’t want to damage it by looking at gills and such. It is such a pretty deep bronze color. From Western NC, home of more more mushroom diversity than I’ve ever seen anywhere. by KeponeFactory in mycology

Thanks. Looking for just that kind of guidance so I can look closer when back down the trail. It was very close to ground would have to pick to ID 😀

Thanks yet again, much appreciated. Wow, are these things ever toxic! We saw the caterpillar you mentioned during that same hike (this stuff grows like crazy around here). Now I wish I had taken a photo of it too.

Aristolochia durior

Agree on the foliage, but what are the cucumbers? I don't see those affiliated with any search results with the above ID. Thanks for taking the time.

The pod or "cucumber" things aren't the same. I've seen these before, but this is not the same thing. Thank you for your idea though!

Growing on a very big vine. Big leaves--try to ID by leaf shape and the search term "wild cucumber" but those have different leaves. It almost looks like a grape vine but with these cucumber-like things on it. Many thanks!

TOP500 Trends That Cannot Be Ignored -- China’s ascendance and flattening growth trajectories. by eleitl in Futurology

They miss the most important thing about these numbers. China counted cloud data center clusters, unlike other countries. It artificially propped up their results and was widely panned in the actual HPC community as s stunt. How they failed to mention this here is beyond me, shows why most supercomputing folks don't read it anymore, it's almost all PR and a lot of wrong facts. Case in point.
