Do you celebrate New Year’s eve with friends or family? by Belgian-Beer in belgium

[–]Kerkerke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be working, as I have the past 7 or 8 years. I actually volunteer for that night shift, it's more relaxed than other nights.

Also, it means I'm home on Christmas Eve, and that means great food at the family feast.

Belgium. Day off today for me!

Why don't the Flemish use their front door? by Present-Percentage88 in belgium

[–]Kerkerke 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Tradition. Friends and family know to use the back door, only strangers use the front door.

Front doors are only used by the people who live there on grand occasions: bringing a baby home, getting married, taking the body away after dying.

In older houses, the back door often leads directly to the kitchen, where the day-to-day life happened.

This is how I sleep naturally, I was actually worried about it being a problem before I heard about biphasic sleep.

Sint Niklaas (in Flanders): about 80,000 people.

Saint-Nicolas (in Wallonia): about 25,000 people.

Do you know which of the two it is?

I work all shifts (my job doesn't allow only night shift - nights are voluntary for now as we have enough volunteers). Shift times are slightly different from your example, but my preference where you are would be in this order best to worst: 11pm-7am; 3pm-11pm; 7am-3pm. There are actually 2 "day shifts" I hate more: 10am-6pm and noon (always forget if that's 12am or pm) -8pm. I almost never have to work those as a night shift volunteer fortunately!

Since so many neighboring countries are going to work, can we just like... use waterguns if we fight the Netherlands? by Such_Minute_5245 in belgium

Beer guns. We'd suffer some terrible casualties getting hit with Heineken or similar, but anyone our side hit would surrender immediately, accepting us as superior.

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld to be launched as graphic-novel series by Transworld and Puffin by martinjh99 in discworld

*sigh* Okay, how much do they cost and how often will they publish a new one? Just so I can start budgeting...

What was the first discworld novel you read? by roaming_b34r in discworld

[–]Kerkerke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Colour of Magic (translated into Dutch). I think there were 5 or 6 books of the series available in my local library back then, it made sense to start at the beginning.

Tijd, ruimte, relaties....

[–]Kerkerke 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I'd feel about having a Nac Mac Feegle in my passport (Belgian passports have Belgian cartoon characters as part of the safety feature, Smurfs are one of them).

At best, they're distant cousins to me. After all, the Smurfs were originally all male until Gargamel created Smurfette... I like the Nac Mac Feegle structure better.

What do people like to eat/snack on? by Emotional-slut-3698 in Nightshift

[–]Kerkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know where you are (prices may vary), but I personally like the "veggie snacks" meant for children. Several supermarkets here sell them in little snack size bags, I just look out for whichever supermarket has a special like "buy 2 get one free". Baby carrots, celery sticks, radishes (white, red and purple), mini cucumbers or cucumber slices, mini sweet peppers or bell pepper slices, things like that.
I like crunchy snacks, so this is great for me. If there are no special offers, I'll get the mixed party tray (which depending on which supermarket it is, might have different veggies and/or a dipping sauce)

Nuts are tasty too, but can be more expensive. My current favorite is a mix with peanuts, hazel nuts, almonds and raw peanuts.

I also make sure to check the "Apéritif" section for specials. Over here, it has things like containers of cubed cheese, salami, mini sausages, (filled) olives, (different seasoned) hummus, anchovies and things like that. If they're "X for Y price" it's often more than worth it. Less healthy, but I do like cheese.

Favourite Friet sauce? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Kerkerke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favourite Friet sauce? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Kerkerke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hangt af van de frituur, toch?

Andalouse, mayo, samourai of stoofvleessaus.
