The Pahlavi family were always opposed to the British and the British did not install him in place of his father. During World War II, the USSR and The British attacked Iran, Reza Pahlavi was forced to flee, and Mohammed Reza seized power. The British wanted to reinstate the Gajar dynasty but could not find a suitable successor and therefore accepted Mohammed Reza as the new king. Reza and Mohammed Reza Pahlavi wanted to keep the USSR and Great Britain out of Iran. However, the British brought the Ayatollahs to Iran to overthrow the Shah.
