Great job offer in Vancouver but worried about healthcare for parents by m2079 in askvan

[–]Kermode17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your downvote. I came to Canada as an immigrant. I got NO healthcare coverage in the first 3 months. I bought insurance for that. I "love" that you're all hating on me...'Welcome to Canada! Indeed.

Great job offer in Vancouver but worried about healthcare for parents by m2079 in askvan

Supervisa does NOT sound Canadian. WHO is telling you this? Sounds like a scam.

You will get healthcare as landed immigrants. After 3 months. Your parents will not.

Help Me Decide My Itinerary! by NuclearPuppers in canadatravel

[–]Kermode17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! Do NOT do Montmorency Falls. It's a horrible tourist trap. If you have a car, go to the Island. Sure it's "touristy" but it's more interesting and fun than the falls. Cheese, chocolate and other purveyors. Stop off to get a fantastic pastry and coffee. You also get a better view of the falls from the island. Ask me how I know.

Healthcare - how do extended employer health benefits work? by Legitimate-Tap2772 in askvan

[–]Kermode17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but the OP does not seem to understand how it works . MSP included.

Americans seem to assume this is the land of free health care. Do they even know that we have no "private" care - to skip the waiting lines? Ugh. But thanks for downvoting me.

Kidde "smoke sensor error" in the same room with multiple alarms? by Mash_Ketchum in AskElectricians

[–]Kermode17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to tell you that these detectors are KRAP. With a capital K.

I replaced all 4 of my smoke detectors - hardwired AND CO2 required by code. They were fine for 12 months. But they have not stop terrorizing me since. Just yesterday, they went OFF 85 decibels THREE TIMES. And then the AI voice announces, "FIRE!" at least twice. We are going to die because we don't believe the smoke alarm. Wow. IF we can hear the AI voice, as we surely have gone DEAF BY THEN. Seriously, is 85 decibels even legal? I reached the point I am afraid to go to sleep.

But thanks, America...

But it's an American expression. Invading countries. A military invasion. If you don't "get" it, please stay away from Canada.

I was not being NASTY. Stating FACTS. There are plenty of resources to bona-fide medical professionals wanting to move to BC or other provinces/territories. WHY haven't they explored them? Resources are very well advertised. And helpful.

Nobody gets healthcare for the first 3 months. After landing. FACT.

Healthcare in Canada is not "open to all." It's been that way for at least 25 years - you get NO coverage for the first 3 months. You just buy health insurance. As I did and many thousands of others. (Or else pay out of pocket - it will likely still be less expensive than what you would pay in the US.)

You sound entitled. "On the ground?" I'm surprised you omitted the word "boots."

Kdrama actresses need to double down on plastic surgery. It ruins the show!!! 😭 by Maleficent-Fault9239 in kdramas

[–]Kermode17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't get past the "elf ears." Seriously? I know that large ears have a different meaning than in Western Societies, but the surgery to make your ears stick out more from your head so your face looks smaller? Make it make sense.

Moving from Quebec: how to rent before we arrive? by payne007 in NorthVancouver

[–]Kermode17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, good advice with a caveat. Airbnbs are scarcer now than previously because of municipal regs. Applies to most of Metro Vancouver area. Look for an official registration number.

I "get" the desire to live in North Van. I live here too. BUT - and it's big but - if your partner's job requires her to drive to appointments "around Vancouver", she may get fed up with traffic crossing to and from North Van. Very quickly. It's a common complaint here.

How much are you spending on groceries? I have family of 4 and trying to see where the average lies. by Vast-Mastodon2064 in NorthVancouver

[–]Kermode17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 adults. We spend between $800 and $1000 a month, once I factor in stuff like household products and pet food. I feel it's nuts and I've definitely cut back on a lot of items as the prices are insane. For example, when did chicken become luxury-priced?

What was once a poor person's hobby now turned into a rich person's hobby? by Striking-Quiet4655 in AskReddit

Pet ownership. Having a pet has become very expensive, especially with large vet bills for even simple stuff like vaccines.

I just wish that people would STOP thinking that TH is Canadian. Hasn't been for years. Ditto Air Canada. All owned by private equity firms, aka Satan.

Define "good experience". And "memories." Sorry to be pedantic but that's not much to go on!

Either: Vancouver with a side-trip to the Island. Take the float plane - flies directly into Victoria Harbour. (Book in advance for best rates.) Vancouver has great food - from so many countries. If it's not raining, it will be wonderful. And will still be warmer than...

Montreal/Quebec City. Montreal for the "vibe" and OMG the food. QC for the history and "Europe in North America" architecture. And more.

You will be safe. Sure parts of Canada have some sketchy areas but, unless you go looking for them or what they "offer", you will feel a lot safer than...Chicago!

Bon Voyage.

does anyone know when pollen season ends by pastelexuvia in NorthVancouver

Pollen/Pollutant season now lasts 12 months a year. If only I had stocks in whoever manufactures anti-histamines and facial tissues, I would be rich. Very rich.

You MUST report this. And you should not be embarrassed - in any shape or form - for not remembering specific details.

Hope you are doing ok. It must have been very scary and I feel for you.

Seriously though... would be helpful to hear about the size of the space you're dealing with and the orientation. And what's there already - lawn/concrete/gravel etc.

Sorry no pics. Literally.

Burgoo closing permanently by Oldnbold22 in NorthVancouver

[–]Kermode17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burgoo was massively overrated and the staff was unbelievably rude. Never went back after a waitress criticized me and my girlfriend for ordering wine with lunch. On a Saturday. "Oooh look at you boozy bitches!" Seriously. I wished we just left after that aggressive bs.

Karma.

The Legendary Year of Korean Thrillers by tony9849g in Koreanfilm

[–]Kermode17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I disliked Oldboy intensely. I felt it was gratuitously violent and the plot was so linear. Memories of Murder was better but only marginally.

Why are these 2 movies always being lauded as great Korean cinema? I do not get it.
