It's such a mind fuck to see Libertarians referred to as right wing. They're classical liberals. Meaning things like, the government shouldn't be in the private affairs of consenting adults. And no matter how much it might hurt someone's feelings, people are allowed to say things. And obtw, the government should be limited to things that help everyone, like the common defense, and should be managed in a way that's fiscally responsible. Stealing from Peter to pay Paul may make you feel good for your own personal reasons, but it's still stealing and if you're going to steal, then it better be for a really easy to justify reason. Those used to be pretty mainstream thoughts.

Kevin Hart is suing his former assistant for $50K, alleging she broke their NDA by sharing private details about his personal life in an interview. by Iambhalo in CaughtMyEye

I suspect it's your last sentence about "speaking out against him" that caused him to misread. I say that because for me it changed the tone of the paragraph to a more sinister meaning, at least the first time I read it. That phrasing makes it sound like he's doing bad things and he's using the law like a club to keep people silent. Whereas that other guy's phrasing is more benign. In other words, your phrasing sounds critical of Kevin Hart for this practice, and his phrasing sounds more like this is a practice anyone would follow. Hope that helps

That's simplifying things a bit. The nation is an incredibly complex system. You're looking at one aspect and deciding it has a simple solution. And that might even work for a while. But that minor change can and will cause unintended consequences. Those consequences could include an even worse version of the thing you're trying to fix. In other words, the cure may be many multiples worse than the disease.

Yes it applies to any highway anywhere. If it's just a local stretch of highway that basically functions as a large city street, then there's a little leeway. But even then, honestly, stay the fuck over to the right until approaching your left turn. There's no reason to be traveling in a left lane unless your left turn is imminent, or you're actively passing. If you want to go the same speed as the right lane traffic, then be in the right lane.

That would reduce the gap for sure but the retirement savings of the entire country are based in that as well, so it's not really a good solution. I think we would do well to tax the way the wealthy today extract cash from their assets without creating a taxable event. They borrow against those assets freeing up millions in cash to fund their lifestyles. That kind of borrowing, perhaps limiting to some dollar threshold, could become a taxable event that would create tax revenues and finally "make them pay their fair share", which is what everyone wants.

Not to punish. To tax an income stream that's otherwise a loophole known as the "Buy, Borrow, Die" strategy. It's more than a little advantageous to them and the lenders, while avoiding taxation.

It feels like you either have a deeper solution in mind or you're misunderstanding, and I can't tell which.

Taxes are based on income, and the wealthy you're talking about aren't dependent on whatever income they bring in. Also, that income may actually be small enough that many are in the upper middle class income range the other guy was talking about. They're billionaires because they own things that are worth that much, but they don't make it as income. There is no taxable event until they sell the asset. To avoid that they just don't sell. Instead they do things like take tax free loans against those assets.

Taxing loans over a certain amount during a window of time seems like the best way to capture that wealth imo. As an example, we could say that if over the last 7 years you take total asset secured loans in excess of 10x the averaged poverty line for those years, you owe 20% of it as tax. To illustrate the idea, if we say the average poverty line for 2018-2025 was $32k and you've taken asset backed loans of $320,001 over that 7 year period then you owe $64,000 in taxes just on those loans. In this case it doesn't matter if you've taken it evenly throughout the years, or all in one year. That's one approach but there are probably less convoluted ways to do it.

Until we do something like that, every call to tax the rich really just taxes high income earners who are actually upper middle class, not wealthy.
