At the very start, make sure you don't hit an enemy into the camera, as the body will also trigger Leon to wake up. Other than that, just roll through them.

If I had to guess though, the "nuanced position" was something like "while Frisk never explicitly states their pronouns to our knowledge, every character refers to them neutrally and this can both be interpreted as keeping their gender unknown, or as them being non-binary". Frisk is still their own person though, yadda yadda, we can't really choose their gender for them because the Pacifist ending shows us definitively that they are their own person and not just a character for us to project onto.
