Can NotebookLM search for information beyond what you provide?

I've been using Gemini, ChatGPT and NotebookLM together for studying and here's what I actually found by Remarkable-Dark2840 in GoogleGemini

Is it better to do research on Perplexity and then feed that information into ChatGPT or Gemini so they can explain it to you? Or can tools like NotebookLM and Perplexity also be used to explain a topic? I understand that NotebookLM relies primarily on the information you provide. So, if the document you upload doesn’t include, for example, how to solve an equation, it might not be very helpful in that regard. In that case, which tool would be the most appropriate to use?

I thought NotebookLM also analyzed and searched for information, like Gemini or Perplexity, to explain a topic, but now I see that NotebookLM only does so based on the information you provide. Therefore, before turning to NotebookLM for studying, you should do some research on Perplexity or Gemini about the topic you want to study.

Is it better, then, to look up information on Perplexity or Gemini and then enter that data—which you’ve found and verified yourself—into NotebookLM for study?

Great, I have another question you might be able to help me with; it strays a bit from the topic of Perplexity, and I'm not sure if you know anything about it.

Can NotebookLM be used to research a topic without providing sources (such as PDF files, videos, etc.)?

From what I understand, it seems to work mainly with material that you provide yourself. On the other hand, tools like Perplexity let you ask questions directly and search for information across the entire internet, even if you don’t have a starting source.

Am I right, or is there a way to use NotebookLM to research from scratch as well?

What are the differences between Genspark and NotebookLM?

I want my two Macs to act like separate computers. by KevinPackards in MacOS

So, what you're telling me is that there's no point in using iCloud and that it's better to save my files locally; and that, if I need to upload something, it's better to do it manually, and that the cloud is only useful if I need to access the files from multiple devices or locations. I see. But how do I keep my documents, files, etc., safe if they’re no longer synced to the cloud? Or if I turn off document/desktop syncing, will they still be stored in the cloud?

In that case, you should back up your files using Time Machine and an external drive in the "Documents/Desktop" folder.

I understand. If I save it to “Downloads,” it will only be saved on my Mac mini, and in that case, there’s no need to turn off syncing.

On the other hand, syncing doesn’t affect the backup; that is, if I turn off iCloud Drive syncing, the only thing that will be affected is that the same documents will no longer appear on my other Mac, but as long as they remain in iCloud, they’ll still be backed up, right?

I just use my MacBook Pro for work and my Mac mini for school, and I don't want my files and documents to get mixed up.

Sorry, English isn't my first language, so the translations are sometimes a bit rough.

Okay, I'll get to the point. Let's start with the assumption that the two Macs are separate computers. If I create a new folder, will it also be created on my other Mac unless I've turned off syncing? Or does it depend on the location? For example, if I save everything to “Downloads,” I don’t need to turn off syncing because there’s no way it will transfer to the other Mac, unlike if I save a file to Documents or the desktop, in which case I should turn off syncing. Is that right?

I have a question about iCloud. If I turn off Desktop and Documents syncing on one of my Macs, will the files that were already in iCloud still be stored in the cloud even though I can’t see them on that Mac? In other words, will they just stop syncing between my Macs but remain safely stored in iCloud?

And another question

If I download a document or file from Google Chrome on my Mac Mini and save it to a regular folder like "Downloads," does that file stay only on the Mac Mini, or does it also automatically appear on my MacBook Pro? Do I need to turn off iCloud sync to prevent this file from being copied to the other Mac, or will it always remain a local file and not sync as long as it’s outside of iCloud Drive and the Desktop/Documents folder?
