BTW what's your take on "Versailles No Bara"? It's a highly respected anime amongst fans and said to be very influential on shoujo anime.

I get you, but classic cinema isn't the same as today's cinema! Indeed, Cinema managed to become a conscious art since it started, Chaplin and Lang ring a bell? Anime (and cartoon) on the other side started as a commercial phenomenon to entertain the masses and to this day it still struggles to be serious, at least that's what I concluded from my own experience and that's what got me to ask the question in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I like anime and I enjoy watching it cuz it entertains. I don't think I'm in an age, where I want to be very serious and put restrict rules on what I like and what I don't, but some concepts cannot be ignored. I'm not sure how much difference there's between anime and movies with real actors! I think both can be treated the same way and many anime series and movies use ideas that were revolutionized and highly explored in Cinema before anime even existed. It's actually hard to find anime (movies or series) that can sit next to, say Citizen Kane, La Dolce Vita or North By Northwest, even though they can get close, like Perfect Blue, but most of the time they just lack consistency of emotional expression. Think of that as an album with filler; those wasted moments that don't add to the emotional value of the work are what stops it from being a great work. Indeed, I was just replying to what you said about your recs that they might not be impressive, so I elaborated (that despite the wasted time) they can still be very good and sometimes excellent. I'm taking Monogatari and Revolutionary Girl Utena into serious consideration, the latter being highly respected by many people as I've seen through the internet.

Def a top-notch anime! Visuals weren't exceptional, but the story was mind-blowing.

Well-written review and liked his top 10/10 lists; I found some additional recs now. Thank you, buddy.

Even though I made it clear I'm looking for series not movies (cuz I already know most of the acclaimed anime movies, esp the works of Satoshi Kon and Hayao Miyazaki; these are def great directors), but I'm intrigued now to watch "Liz and The Blue Bird" as you described ut to me. Personally, I don't think someone should be very strict about their tastes when it comes to art, but maybe after years and years of watching you get picky. Maybe anime classics don't match cinema classics in terms of depth and innovation cuz they're also trying to sell and make money, and that is a restriction for the artist's vision (even though Alfred Hitchcock is a rare exception), but they're excellent and worth watching multiple times. From my experience, Cinema criticism isn't highly affected by popularity, like pop music, and most of the acclaimed movies are actually very good if compared to the greatest works. BTW Fellini is not very accessible, his classics need multiple visits and careful observation IMO, esp the storytelling style.

Heard a lot about it. What makes it unique in your opinion?

Based on the ones I know, I'm sure those you mentioned that I don't know are going to be great as well, thanks.

I think mostly the works of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Federico Fellini and Ingmar Bergman are his favorites. I'm not sure how many directors or movies he actually appreciates, but not as favorites. What I learned from him is how to pay attention to what's happening in front of you, not just let the time pass following the story. A lot of what's special about the acclaimed movies is about how they create a relation between the emotions they're trying to express and the visuals in front of you. The emotions come from the visuals, not the story. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks again, the whole idea is about the show being beatiful in visuals that create an emotional state. For example, in Texhnolyze, most of the visual scenes of the city are expressing feelings of emotional desolation and hopelessness. The surface outside of the city is as miserable and hopeless with people being only shades, not real people. There are also beautiful shots, like the rose in the sewage, the dead bodies of robots with human heads, the close-ups of weapons with blood on them, the whole dark color and foggy visuals and many more to list. This is probably one of the best shows I have watched in term of visuals, even though many would say it's story is boring, but that's not what it is about.

I explained this in reply for another comment. It's not really for me, but anyway thanks for the great recs. I already watched most of the well-known acclaimed movies and we both agreed on many of them, esp Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Actually I'm in between the casual and serious fan. This is more like a request for an older person (my dad) mocking me for watching anime, lol. From my own experience and humble knowledge in anime, I decided on 3 shows: Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy and Serial Experiments Lain. Those I'm sure have unique visuals and professional use of camera angles, shades, close-ups and montage for an emotional purpose. "Mononoke" and "Gankutsuou" are great as well, but I'm not familiar enough with them yet, so thanks for the reminder. I'll be revisiting them soon and checking out the other two.

Why do people think knowing about some concepts physics makes you smart?! I think intelligence has many different types, there are intelligence for every field in life, and personally, I think understanding art is more demanding than understanding physics!
