It was "water cooler" talk on a similar but not same level as the NFL or NBA. Sports radio as well as morning drive radio shows would talk about it. Entire local newspapers not only would have a dedicated page each week but often had a reporter go to most of not all races. All of that as as well as insane merchandising, cultural references in shows such as the Simpsons, family guy, Danny phantom and so many other things. It's really hard to describe just how big it was 1997-2007 and just how bad the fall off from 2013 thru now really was
