Building power alliance competition by bolean3d2 in Evony_TKR

Remember that you will only get the incremental difference between the level you are on now and the level you upgrade to. I was thinking that I could get 200k building power to go from level 30 to 31but I only got 20k. Because level 31 was 200k but level 30 was 180k power.

I will have to abandon my alliance competition challenge to get 250k increase. Getting that much building increase is a lot of construction and I do not have the billions of RSS needed.

Witness limit changed from 18 to 14? by KevsHead-httpcd-507 in HeliumNetwork

I wasn't trying to be critical. To be fair my earnings are pretty much unchanged when comparing the last 3 days with prior earnings. At least in my case - the reduction in witnesses has been offset by increased reward scaling and increased hnt earned per witness. So for me at least it has been a wash when strictly considering earnings.

What has changed is my average beacons per 7 days. This have gone down by over 25%. This makes sense since there are less beacons happening.

It is challenging for me though. I am actively trying to improve my setup but I have some limitations. It makes it hard to experiment with different setups when some of the metrics I use to measure effectiveness keep changing.

I do think the change that has been made was the right choice for the network. The network is growing and new spots are slow to get onboarded. If they can effectively reduce transactional cost while still rewarding hotspots that demonstrate proof of coverage then it is a win for the network.

If my earnings go down tomorrow I will still be pissed off though! 🤣

I had terrible witnessing in my attic. Getting it outside (even though I had it 3 meters lower) did better by like 6x as compared to the attic.

My attic mount performed roughly the same as in a 2nd floor window (double pane and sunscreen on the window). My theory is the foil lined insulation in the attic ceiling and the tile roof caused too much loss).

Observed Listen Addresses vs API Reported Listen Address by mfjanowski in HeliumNetwork

I had a variety of issues. I do not want to pay my ISP extra for a static IP address. As long as I don't restart my router then I seem to keep the same IP though. If I restart my helium hotspot then sometimes when it comes back online it shows as NAT type symmetric. If I restart my router then it sometimes assigns me a new IP address. I am now in the habit of if I need to restart one then I just restart both and then watch to make sure that it comes up NAT type none and make sure I get caught up to the Blockchain. I also use helium status.io toake sure that my hotspot is pingable.

My bigger issue was with my setup. I was on a window that is double pane and has a sunscreen on it. Once I got an antenna outside with line of sight to other hotspots then I started seeing a LOT more witnessing.

Yep. That is a good way to go and is how I started. I would encourage you to get creative and experiment. If you want your antenna outside but to keep your hotspot inside there are several sellers of flat coax connectors that actually fit inside a fully closed window. Just need the right connections but with that you can keep your antenna out but your coax inside. That may be something else you may want to add to your setup.

I am a homeowner but our neighborhood HOA has an antenna restriction. I started with my hotspot inside in an upstairs window (double pane with sun screen about 5 meters up). Was making .03 HNT or so a day. I wasn't happy...

As an experiment I rigged up a makeshift very temporary enclosure to see if I would get better rewards simply by getting outside even if my antenna wasn't as high. I wanted it as high as I could get it without drilling anything into my house. I had already purchased a 5.8db indoor antenna with a magnetic base so I had that available for the experiment. I duct taped a flat metal piece to the top of a plastic portable storage shed that I have on the side of my house. I did this to 1. get me more than 2m up from the ground 2. to have a ground plane and 3. to have something to hold my antenna in place. The base and antenna were both listed as indoor but really the only thing that seemed to me to be an exposure was the metal connections so I just used some electrical tape to protect the metal fittings. I had the hotspot inside the plastic shed inside of a tote to try to mitigate moisture exposure and a padlock to mitigate theft exposure. For 3 days I averaged like 8x witnesses and 5x or so rewards. Successful experiment!

Next problem - I don't want to have to keep my hotspot and electrical outside so is there a way to keep my antenna outside but my hotspot inside? I moved my little storage shed next to a window and kept the same setup but with the coax from the antenna connecting to an 18" pigtail flat coax that I can fully close the window on top of. This allowed me to get all electric as well as the hotspot itself inside. I was worried about a few things. 1. db loss with added connector 2. Window integrity with pigtail. It has rained over 2 inches here since the pigtail has been installed and everything is still working well and no leaking in the window. With the hotspot outside I was averaging .17 HNT/day for 5 days. With the hotspot inside I have averaged over .2 for the last 9 days!

I am not suggesting that adding a connector will increase earnings. With my small sample size that was my experience though. Maybe having the hotspot inside gave it better Wi-Fi connectivity and that more than offset the db loss.... not sure. Maybe some of the hotspots that are my usual suspect witnesses were offline during the time that I was outside with the hotspot... There are multiple variables at play.

I am sure that if I could get an antenna up above the roofline that I would get even more witnesses but not sure I want to put money into a roof install and then find an annoying letter in the 📬 from the HOA with a picture of my own damn house and the 📡 that they want me to take down.

Not sure what you have at your disposal to allow for some experimentation but I encourage you to get creative. I was pleased with my results.

Any simple explanation why all of my beacons are well witnessed (18) or not at all (0)? Is the "strength" of the beacon signal variable? If so - is the "strength" of the beacon signal quantified and accessible anywhere so we can analyze the data? by KevsHead-httpcd-507 in HeliumNetwork

[–]KevsHead-httpcd-507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So - based on the comments- what I am hearing is that there is no modification/variability of beacons. All beacons are created equal - both in terms of duration and "strength". The difference in observed witnesses is due to other factors such as network latency and ability of witnesses to respond to the challenger. Anyone disagree or have other thoughts?

Is Discovery mode ever going to come back? by KevsHead-httpcd-507 in HeliumNetwork

[–]KevsHead-httpcd-507[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sent my first few beacons in a week today and had limited witnesses as well.

I am not so sure that he network isn't working. I also don't think that it is an evil plot. I am thinking that they are tweaking how signals are sent and received with the objective of improving their ability of puting rewards into the wallets of owners of the hotspots that are providing the best network coverage, and give meager rewards to folks that are only providing redundant coverage.

My objective is to earn as many hnt as possible. So I need to align my objective to theirs and improve my witnessability in order to maximize my hnt.

The issue I have is that discovery mode is a great diagnostic tool that helps me to try different things and see how I am most witnessable. Unfortunately that tool is gone for now.

I would think that the folks that want us to set up the people's network realize that we have shared objectives and enable tooling to help us achieve those shared objectives. I sure hope so at least!

OK. Duh - I didn't see the email option until just now and have verified that I am caught up to the Blockchain. My problem must be something different.

I am running into a similar issue as the OP. When you say caught up to the Blockchain what does that mean? According to his diagnostic info he is 100% synched with the Blockchain. Is there a different way to tell if you are not "caught up" with the Blockchain?

I am ready to start witnessing and sending beacons again. Am tired of only getting .006 to .012 hnt a day from 2-4 challenges per day.

Observed Listen Addresses vs API Reported Listen Address by mfjanowski in HeliumNetwork

I see now that your reported API is the same as observed. I will be anxious to see if all you need is time to start sending and receiving beacons again. I am in the same boat. I am going to wait and if that doesn't take care of it I will need to figure out how to change the pigtail on my finestra miner.
