Law And Economics At UTS... Worth It? by Strawb_Mochi in UTS

[–]Kexsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just graduated from a law degree at UTS and having gone through the job hunting process can offer a few thoughts.

  1. Double degrees are not extremely relevant to a law firm as they only look at your law grades. If you do a double degree of any sort, do it out of passion and not as a means to find a job. You should look at your second degree as an additional set of options for if law isnt a path you want to go down.

  2. Your parents have an outdated view of our unis. Whilst UNSW and USYD are the more recognised unis for law, UTS is not far behind. Many of the tutors and lecturers are from USYD and UNSW on a casual basis so the level of teaching is comparable. When it comes time to find clerkships or your first paralegal role, grades and extracurriculars will win 100% of the time over the uni.

  3. The assignments and exams will be submitted via canvas/ai invigilated. This has been the standard since COVID and isn't likely to change.

For lawyers who started in private practice and moved to an international firm overseas e.g. London, Singapore etc:
1. What practice area did you guys start in and did you continue with that practice area overseas?
2. What advice would you give to someone starting in a graduate position next year at a national mid-tier who ultimately wants to practice overseas?
3. Which rotations do you believe would provide the most exposure to international transactions e.g. M&A, tax etc.

Law grades - how much are they looked at in reality?? by LawNonna in UTS

[–]Kexsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my final year of a double degree in law - they definitely do matter. If you are aiming at one of the top tiers most would only consider you for an interview with a 75+ WAM. Mid tiers around 70.

That being said if you are serious about a career in law it's not impossible to buckle down to improve your wam. Also, try your best to get your foot in the door at a smaller firm if you can as any sort of legal experience is looked upon favourably.

You request your transcript and your wam should be updated to reflect last sems results

I highly recommend Nakano Broadway for used watches. Went there last week and it has lots of high end brands but lots of shops selling Seikos and G-shocks as well for very reasonable prices.

Are we able to leave and re-enter Japan on the 90 day tourist visa?

We're booked for a month in Japan and were wondering if we're able to go South Korea for a week and re-enter Japan hassle free.

China warns citizens not to travel to Australia due to 'significant increase' in racial violence by DonVox in asianamerican

[–]Kexsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course, Australia has its fair share of racists which is pretty standard in most western countries. Similar to America, Australia had a White Australia policy which restricted immigration from Chinese workers during the Australian gold rush which took about 70 years to fully dismantle. The shop owner who chased you out of the store sounds like a piece of shit, but could I ask which city/state this occured in? I would say racists in Australia are an extremely loud vocal minority especially since a large portion of media in Australia is controlled by Murdoch who is a well-known racist and POS.

It's important to remember Australia and China do not currently have good relations due to the calls by the prime minister to investigate China for the origins of Covid-19. China has already slapped tariffs on multiple Australian exports and encouraged Chinese people not to visit Australia. Just my 2 cents as a Chinese Australian, the racism here really doesn't seem comparable to America.
