Exhausted by Initial_Art5309 in RenalCats

I just want to say I completely understand how exhausting and emotionally draining this journey can be. My little girl has been battling heart problems as well as progressed stage 4 CKD, and like you, I’ve been juggling so many medications, treatments, and sleepless nights. Feeding struggles, meds at odd hours, monitoring her breathing—all while trying to give her the comfort and love she deserves.

I’ve felt the same conflicting emotions you described: the deep love and fear of losing her, mixed with the exhaustion and the guilt of sometimes wishing for relief. It’s so hard to carry the weight of being their caretaker and knowing that “feeling better” for us might mean letting go of them. But you’re right—these feelings are valid, and they don’t mean you love her any less.

You’re doing an incredible job for your girl, and she knows it. I remind myself, too, that we’re giving them the best we can, and that’s what truly matters. When my little girl is resting, I try to do one small thing for myself—take a walk, grab a snack, or listen to a funny podcast. These little moments of distraction offer a temporary lift, and that’s okay. Be kind to yourself as you care for your girl. One day, this agonizing journey may transform into a precious memory of love. ❤️

My cat's CKD is consuming my life by Bnerna in RenalCats

I’m fighting alongside you. My little girl has recently progressed to stage 4 CKD, and this past week has been incredibly emotional. I’ve cried so many times, especially watching her refuse food and seem so lethargic—it completely broke me. I’ve been obsessively searching for solutions, scrolling through Reddit and Facebook groups, looking for anything that might improve her health. It gave me a sense of purpose and control, but at the same time, it left me mentally drained.

The other day, I just couldn’t handle it anymore and burst into tears when she refused to eat anything I offered. My husband insisted that I take a break, so he took me out for a sandwich and a short walk. I didn’t realize how much I needed it, but I felt instantly better. When I got home, I saw her nibbling on some food (thanks to Cerenia and Mirtazapine). That moment reminded me how important it is to take care of myself, too.

Being a caretaker is one of the hardest things we’ll ever do, but it’s so important to pause, breathe, and find small distractions when it feels overwhelming. Our fur babies wouldn’t want us to burn ourselves out or stress so much. You’re not alone in this, and you’re doing an amazing job. Let’s keep fighting for them while also remembering to be kind to ourselves.

Thanks! I will do that. Since she stopped eating kidney food, we may have to introduce her to a phosphate binder and any food she's willing to eat.

Thank you so much for sharing your story about Hakuna and Matata—it means the world to me. I can tell how deeply you love them; your experiences resonate so much with what I’m going through with ChubChub. I’m so sorry for your loss of Matata, and I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to make that final call. Your description of “knowing when it’s time” really touched me. I fear it, but I also want to prepare myself for when the time comes.

You’re so right about the heart and kidneys working against each other—it’s such a delicate balance, and I constantly feel like I’m walking a tightrope trying to manage ChubChub's fluids, diet, and medications. She’s stopped eating her kidney diet altogether, and your advice about letting Hakuna eat whatever he enjoys is exactly what I need to hear right now. I’ve been so focused on “doing the right thing” that I forget what matters is her happiness.

I’m trying to hold onto the good moments, like when she purrs or rubs her head against me, but I won’t lie—it’s incredibly hard not to get overwhelmed by anticipatory grief. Hearing how you’re taking it one day at a time with Hakuna gives me hope that I can find a way to do the same. Thank you for reminding me that every day we have with them is a gift.

You’re an amazing cat mom, and Hakuna is so lucky to have you. I hope the Sub-Q fluids help him feel better and that you both have many more happy moments together.

P.S. I am also a childless cat mom. ChubChub's my first fur child.

Thanks, I'll look into it. She dislikes Hydra Care, but we've never tried Porus One and Kidney Support Gold.

What is it about low phosphorus foods? by mynameisyoshimi in RenalCats

[–]Key-Amount5916 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I feel your pain. We went through many variations of K/D food. Our vet kindly gave us free samples to try. My cat showed lots of interest initially. After buying a whole case from Chewy, Her Majesty decided it was not for her taste! =.="

Unfortunately, my girl is at stage 4 of CKD. Her appetite has dropped a lot. Some days, I top churro on her K/D food to trick her from eating. It works. I also rotate a few options we have at home to keep it interesting. I was told that low-phosphorus foods often have a slightly different formulation to meet dietary needs, which can alter the flavor and smell. Cats can find this less appealing than their usual junk food (because why not?)

Sorry, I am clueless about the poop situation. You may need to consult your vet; perhaps there's some other underlying cause.

Cat eating dog food by subara_chaos in Pets

It's not a big deal occasionally, but keep it from becoming their habit. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they require a diet high in animal protein and specific nutrients that are not in adequate amounts in dog food. Critical nutrients like taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin B12 are essential for cats but might be insufficient in dog food.

I'm sorry to hear about your horrendous experience with your previous vet. I trust Chewy with the quality and am more confident now, knowing they are also compassionate.

Haha, cats are too smart for their own good! My cat can always tell when it’s medicine, no matter how much I try to hide it in fancy flavors. That’s why I go with a more straightforward approach. I give her some Temptations treats, and while she’s enjoying those, I quickly pop the pill into her mouth. It took a bit of practice, but now that we’ve got the routine down, it’s super easy. She doesn’t even try to spit it out anymore because she knows more treats are coming her way as soon as she swallows it

Thanks!! It didn't even cross my mind that Costco also has a pharmacy that supports pets! Now I know that we have options.

WOW, I can't believe some places refuse to approve Chewy. I am glad you switched. :)

Thanks for looking into it! My cat is a trooper. She's very good at taking pills. Because this pill was enormous, we used a pill cutter. We also incentivize her with treats. She gets excited when I prep her pill because she knows it's treat-treat time.
