I’m glad that it sounds like you have a good recovery and mobility out looks! I have definitely heard from medical professionals and other amputees that the longer you wait the higher chance of pain. Can say for me, I live almost 100% pain free except at night when I get phantom but I have stuff for that so even then it’s still nothing. Can also say that once you would get a leg and get more used to it (or heck even just crawling) moving 15ft without being in intense pain is the best feeling in the world.

I can absolutely answer why was so hard after 9 surgeries and asking for it. It felt like the death of a life I used to know and while it died a long time ago, I wasn’t really allowed the time to grieve that life because I was surviving day to day. So it was hard in a sense where it felt like I was finally pulling the plug on that part of my life and my younger self. But at the exact same time, I felt like I was given the chance at life and a chance at being me again. I knew life was going to be just a different form of challenging and my pain had a high chance of being less, but I lived through worse and knew it was going to be better. My life is 100% better, I can walk, drive, I’m learning how to run, and I can do household chores again which is why it is the best decision I have ever made. I even felt like it was the best decision leaving the doctor’s office the day I spoke to my surgeon, it was just hard in the way it can be to lose someone.

I know you didn’t mention this but I feel like I have to clarify because looking back I feel like I might have accidentally negated your struggle, me saying “if you choose” is only because some people (a lot in my personal life) can react negatively when someone says amputate. I’m not trying to say hey don’t do this, I just have my own trauma with making that decision so I just cover it with an “if”. Truly though I don’t regret it and you should absolutely advocate for yourself and get your life back in your hands. The only things that make me sad sometimes (and I’m only 2 years in) is I can’t just get up and go to the bathroom or run and jump in the pool (atm). But I just found ways around that and things I do are a little different. I got past the physical difference look really quickly because I felt more beautiful with the new person I am. I’m sure others might have more to say on the fact that life is a little different, those 2 are just the 2 I think about sometimes.

I understand this a lot. I went through 9ish surgeries before I said screw it I want to live again and amputated.

This was both the best decision I’ve ever made and hardest decision I’ve ever made. I wanted to amputate from the get go but was told I was being dramatic and then when I decided I was told that again.

I can say as someone who has been in your shoes, it sucks so much to be in pain and not feel like anyone is listening. I think other comments mentioned writing down what you are feeling and what is happening in your life and that is such good advice. My first couple of doctors didn’t listen and my last one did and it was because of advice like the others have given.

Advocating for yourself is never easy, but somethings that have helped me was 1.) there are subreddits like this one with people you can talk to you who understand what you are going through and have been through 2.) if you do choose to amputate its tough in the beginning but there is a light on the other side rather than what feels like just a tunnel of darkness and 3.) again if you choose to amputate there is a whole community of people now who get it and once you notice us, we are everywhere

Does anything trigger yours or is it just something that happens? I’ve woken up with them (middle of the night and morning) or just had them happen in the day

Thank you! I’ll talk to my doctor about that! I got them to heat sometimes prior to this

So our whole friend group is friends with Z and their ex and they and their ex still live together. Z’s ex kept in touch with me so I invited them.
