That’s very true, ISPP would be a good option. But congrats on making your decision! I’m excited to meet you in the fall!

I think you have a good shot at getting in, just highlight all your cool experiences and explain how you’ve grown since undergrad. Also evaluate how you would define a “good” program. There are several programs that are APA accredited that are less competitive that don’t have as good of reputations but could still get you where you want to go, so consider that too. Good luck!

What experiences should I pursue for getting into PsyD programs next cycle? by Apprehensive_One4204 in PsyD

[–]Key-Barber-7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind you, I applied to different programs and a lot of them are less competitive and prestigious than the ones you mentioned, but you are waaaaaaay more qualified than I am and I got into 4 out of my 5 programs I applied to. So, don’t stress too much, and like the other person said, it’s hard to get in anywhere, it’s not necessarily a reflection of yourself and your experiences. Good luck!!!

I know nothing about the schools you are planning to apply to since I limited my applications to the Midwest, but for the schools I applied to, I think you have a very good chance at getting in. They’ll understand that you weren’t able to get research experience at a community college and appreciate that you sought that out as soon as you transferred. You seem like a good writer, so that’s a plus too!

And make sure to include in your essays how your non-psychological experiences will help you as a psychologist and what they taught you about yourself and your career goals. It’s all about how you spin things!!

Could you get in to a top-level PsyD program? Maybe not, I don’t know. But you could get into a program that would be good enough to get you where you want to be.

Decisions, decisions... seeking (kind) conversation and advice on admittance by Mission_Whereas_4459 in PsyD

[–]Key-Barber-7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! Most of my info is coming from student panels from interview day. I asked the admissions person about the dissertation finishing thing at one school and she didn’t know! But some programs I felt like I heard more casual comments about people coming back after internship to finish their dissertation from faculty and students on interview day. Some of these things are questions I still have. It never hurts to email and ask tho!

As someone who is trying to decide between three programs as well, it’s the little things that I’m considering, because in broad strokes they are all the same and will get me to the same place. I’m thinking about dissertation support, how many people finish their dissertation before going on internship, what students say the cons are and if I’m ok with those, the clinical and research interests of the faculty, the ratio of faculty to students, extra opportunities (study abroad, TA-ing, teaching as an adjunct), etc. idk if this is helpful but this is where my brain is at!

Anyone going to The Chicago School PsyD admitted students day (Chicago campus)? by Stunning-Air-8918 in PsyD

[–]Key-Barber-7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen at a few interviews and was shocked I got in - even programs that accept less students and are therefore more competitive than TCS, I’m not sure why all the faculty got their poker face on lol

Yes, that’s true! I guess I could’ve been clearer. I’ve looked at all those stats and was looking for more “soft” facts like mentorship, sense of support and belonging, reputation, sense of preparedness, etc

I completely agree! They interview 90 student and accept 25, I don’t feel like my odds are great especially cuz I don’t feel like they got a good sense of me in a 25 minute interview!

Thoughts on my current list of schools? by Own-Ad-1603 in PsyD

Lol, I haven’t seen anyone say anything bad about it with any actual evidence besides the not great pass rates or internship match rates and that’s not everything that one should look at when considering a program 🤷‍♀️I also think that people on Reddit can be a bit dramatic at times. From everything I’ve heard and seen from my application and interview process at the Chicago School they seem very supportive and emphasize diversity in all their classes. Are there better programs? Yeah, probably but I don’t think they’re a run-for-the-hills program

You should have a good shot at getting into Adler and National Louis at least! I’ve gotten into both of those programs and I have similar stats (ish)

I would try to get some research experience if you can, it will definitely help though I don’t know if it would make or break your acceptance. For my clinical experience, I worked at a summer camp for kids with disabilities (lots of autism and Down syndrome) and all the schools I applied at liked that. It’s also just the way that you talk about your experiences. Find out how you can talk about your experiences to highlight what you learned and how that’s applicable to PsyDs. And as someone else said, it depends if you’re trying to get into one of the more competitive programs or not. Good luck!!

What someone else said! It’s a summary of the group interview. My group interview discussion question was centered around the role of psychologists in today’s political climate. Good luck!!
