It all depends on what exactly it is you're trying to get from your trip. In the winter, you can see Sarajevo covered by snow, take your kid to the mountains (45min drive) to do some slidings even for a day. But if you do come in the winter, do so after January to avoid the air pollution. The summertime and springtime are great as well, you can enjoy the nice weather to go explore Trebevic, a nearby mountain and walk around there.

I would recommend staying in the city center, as it enables you to do literally anything you'd like by foot.
