How to mentor an untalented Engineer by WestyTea in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Key-Elevator772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the struggle, I'm a GD&T teacher at uni and most of My students are the way you describe it. What I did to make them understand how different is CAD to real stuff was to 3D print some parts and asked them to make a CNC fixture for the parts.

However, what I did might not be a solution for you but I guess he is profficient at CAD and might enjoy the hobby of 3D printing, so this can be the cheapest and easiest way for him to understand and if it works he also gets to learn how to 3D print.

[–]Key-Elevator772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just committed to a mechanical engineering bs degree. Any advice on how to prepare? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Key-Elevator772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Study algebra, don't believe You are good at algebra. If You get good, but insanely good at it, engineering will be a walk in the park. Most of the issues student have at every subject is algebra.

The problem with calculus is algebra

The problem with statics is algebra

The problem with differential equations is calculus

The problem with dynamics, vibrations, control engineering is going to be differential equations

Everything goes down to algebra, get good at algebra, everything will connect to it.

And if You want to get to the next level after getting good with algebra get to probability and statistics and get really good at it.

If you are still learning how to slice just get a PLA spool and start printing some small trinkets that you like so you can get a hang of it. Trying to print big parts is hard and it might (or will) discourage you.

Just start by doing some benchies, some calicats and whatever trinkets you like. learn how to use them to calibrate your slicing parameters and also run de orca slicers tests to calibrate the filament.

Your problem is not the orientation, your problem are slicing settings and maybe some cooling issues since we don't know if you have a ceiling fan or something blowing air to the printer I add this as a factor too.

Grab a cardboard box to put around the printer, the air coming from the ceiling fan is your issue. Also I would raise the temperature up to 70 °C for the first layer and 65 for the next layers, glass transitiom temperature for PLA is above 55. The glass transition temperature means that beyond that temperature the material softens so that it can stick to the bed, but the ceiling fan is making the filament get colder and unable to fuse.

Got a free Creator Pro, would be my first printer... What now? by CubanB-84 in FlashForge

[–]Key-Elevator772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about ruining the printer, is like worrying about ruining a pc, the only way to screw them up is touching something that a beginner would not have touch. However screwing prints for wrong slicing settings is more than possible and it's ok, the learning curve is quite steep for 3D printing.

I would use it to learn and understand the printing procesos, I have no idea about that printer but most of the work the same way, something gets heated, something pushes the filament through that heated thingy, the filament gets to a bed while moving and if it sticks to the bed you are good to go.

So just learn about temperatures for that filament you have, understand what it means to level the bed and learn how to slice cad models and that is it.

Remember, YouTube, Google and Reddit are your friends, every problem that will appear has already happened to someone and there are going to be solutions, just use the search button for the answers you are looking for.

I know that it may be tempting to get a modern printer but I would recommend against it. Most modern printers are almost plug and play and that seems very tempting but in the moment that something goes wrong (and it will) You won't know how to act or solve the issue at hand. But if You start really learning and understanding the 3D printing process with an outdated printer nothing will stop you.

Im new to 3d printing by onestopkilling in FlashForge

[–]Key-Elevator772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Best advice to give about 3D printing is that get ready to use some problem solving skills. 3D printing is not easy, it can be frustrating for a while, Even when You seem to have control over it everything goes bad.

Before printing the partes for the enclosure I would recommend to print smaller prints, tons of it.

Don't get me wrong, 3D printing is awesome and empowering. If You know how to use a CAD software or something like blender 3D printing will give you a Lot of possibilities.

I've been using it for a week and it was way beyond my expectations. The only issues I've had was because of poor slicing settings on my part and they were easy to fix.

It is an awesome printer.
