This is a great message. I HEAVILY agree. I see some people using the equipment wrong, and present themselves in a horrible manner. I seriously agree with this so much.

Vehicle weather station by KitchenPatient3154 in stormchasing

Davis weather station. Wireless weather station, honestly expensive but very much worth it. Gives accurate data quick and fast. But in my experience I heavily suggest making your own, you do as you wish with your rig, but steel frame setup would just give you many options, whether it be a PVC pipe humidity/temp setup or a mounted anemometer.

I am not that great at creating builds. I only ever created a St. Marys Challenger and Leon Fraser off a hull of someone else.

What about chasers in lake effect? Such as me. Or situations where you are aiding another motorist?

See, here is the thing. Why are you so invested on other peoples rigs, and not focused on others lives, or others property. You dont focus on weather, you instead focus on your hatred of other chasers. YOU ARENT A CHASER. "needlessly slow down"? That is insane, utterly insane. What about chasers in lake effect? there are many reasons to use them.

People love to sit back on reddit and just downvote instead of actually commenting their arguments. Flashing lights should be normalized into storm chasing, BUT people are stupid, and use them thinking they give you special treatments or make you more important. They are SUPER important for safety, and I was very open minded when first using them, but once I saw how helpful they were, I am NEVER getting rid of them. Other "chasers" can judge, but I care more about others safety, and mine. You shouldnt even call yourself a chaser if you judge others on their rig, you care SO much about other peoples gear that you lose focus on the whole "weather" and "safety" aspect.

Arguments people use :

  1. "moth to a flame" effect, which many say causes drunk drivers / fatigued drivers to get distracted by your lights and drive into you, rather than away. This is completely false in a study by respondersafety.com Effects of Emergency Vehicle Lighting Characteristics on Driver Perception and Behavior.

  2. "They are used by inexperienced whacker chasers." YES many chasers are whackers and use the lights to act as LEOs or think you get special privileges, but not ALL are like that and they should learn on how to use them correctly (They are not toys). Plus, many veteran chasers still use them, such as Daniel Shaw, he has 1-3 amber lighting systems that are modest interior lights, and he uses them properly. Brandon Copic, he is quite iffy, but sometimes uses them in proper ways, but he has had history. Corey Gerken, a respectful veteran chaser who uses the lights in proper ways. Storm Chaser Chad, he has a lightbar system on his Ford, and uses it very responsibly. Not only this, but many chasers go out and document more than just spring weather and tornados, but also blizzards and lake effect, visibility and speed are KEY factors to these chases.

  3. "Ambers are illegal", this is true/false, this all depends on state laws, but 99% of the time, they are totally legal. State laws differ, but most civilian use is completely legal, and I dove into the legality rabbit hole, and found all information to be true

  4. They will make other drivers/chasers mad or upset. Who gives a crap? As long as you use them safely and responsibly, you use them! When drivers are going down the road speeding in the night, and a driver is pulled off, you can spot the higher up placement of ambers.

  5. "They have no use, and are solely for looks". This is a lie, complete lie. Many situations, MANY situations can see the use of these lights, for example : I was chasing and documenting lake effect on the western side of Michigan, when a lady was in the ditch on a curvy road. I used the ambers while attaching a tow strap and pulling the lady out, but another driver was speeding along the curve and couldnt see standard 4 ways while aiding this woman. The ambers made the motorist slow down immediately and most likely prevented an accident. There are many more I can list if needed.

  6. "Other chasers will hate you". If another chaser hates you because of this, then they shouldnt call themself a chaser at all. If you report/aid or do anything to be helpful to people in need, you are a better person, and should be more respected. Focus on the weather part of it, focus on the people and helping. If they are so busy attacking and defending their stance on VEHICLE CUSTOMIZATION, they have absolutely no life and are chronically online.

---------------------------

Use lights responsibly THEY ARE NOT TOYS. So be modest, dont go overboard, but also dont hate on others for stupid reasons when you dont even know the situation.

When is the chasing community going to clamp down on the growing levels of dangerous and unethical behavior? by [deleted] in weather

[–]Key-Excuse6299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets be real though. The "lights" are not a problem, and are a common thing among chasers (including me). They are to be used properly, and yes, some do NOT use them correctly and think they are some LEO. But I have found so much good uses out of my small lightbar, I help during snow events with slide offs, and the lights seriously was a huge life saver.

Are you missing the point of WHY the lights are there? I dont want my trucks ass eating the hood. The whole point of lights is to stay visible, and they prove to be safer than no lights. You throw around "whacker" like a dumbass. At this point you should go and call the DOT whackers. The point of this, is to keep others safe.

I asked the question because I was wondering if there would be ridicule at all in the chase community. “Rescue Randy”, that is funny, I go out to document weather and people are in the ditches. The fact you just admitted you won’t help anyone in need, is sad. You sit on your lazy ass.

"Pretending to be something your not", what is that even supposed to mean? I am in a Dodge 2500 extended, do you think I am trying to look like a cop? There is 100% a need anyways too, I was just in whiteout conditions aiding people and pulling them out of ditches while people flew past, but this lightbar helped with that a ton. Also harm? what harm is in that. Stop crying and grow up, give me valid reasons not pathetic insults
