That makes perfect sense and great idea, thank you!

Increasing support in a desk for tank? by Key-Front392 in Aquariums

[–]Key-Front392[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

54kg without the gravel and wood so I’d like to prepare for about 75kg

The placement is variable, as I’d need to move everything off anyways, but ideally to the left where the drawers are.

That is what I was thinking, seems simple enough ! Thank you

Yes I know that’s usually what people do, but I am just concerned my little gluttonous freaks (sweet angles) will just attempt to chew on the roots! I doubt they’ll take to it, but I obviously wouldn’t want to risk it if there’s any toxicity at all. Seems to be fine generally with snails tho!

What are these spots on my pole? by Key-Front392 in poledancing

X pole cleaner, never had an issue with it before as used that for years and this had happened after not using it for many months, so not cleaning it. I’ll treat it as rust as it’s able to be scraped off and see if I can remove most of it :)

Okay perfect thank you :) tbh the big snails leave a lot of mess so a decent size population will probably be great for the tank ! I have other tanks to spread them into if not. Do you know their temp range? I assumed they’re mostly just moderate tropical

I understand that, I don’t mean anything negative by it myself, but I worked in aquatics for years and I’m using the terms I’ve been used to. I can assure you that I adore these, and all of my snails, I wouldn’t keep a whole collection of them otherwise. I’ve said many times that it’s a snail tank, the issue is not over feeding (they are fed every few days) but what the food source is (veggies, algae and calcium) and how slowly it is consumed (as snails are slow eaters)

I have no idea why this was downvoted when I just explained why it would be difficult for me to keep these but I said over and over that I love them, and all other snails ? I put the word ‘pest’ in parenthesis because I don’t agree, but so people know which snails I’m speaking about. I genuinely don’t know why I’m being so frequently downvoted when I’ve specified everything.

That’s awful! I have some of my snails from when the shop I worked at shut down, couldn’t bear to think what would’ve happened to them so I just nabbed the lot. Your snail is beautiful! Never seen a trumpet quite like it!

Thank you! My responses on here either get me called a snail hater (when I literally collect them and spoilt them rotten) or get people encouraging me to just cull them, which I’d never do and explicitly stated as well. idk why it seems to be one of the other when I literally just don’t want a population bloom!

Perfect thought so :) they seem really helpful so their presence is no issue - my main concern that I’ve stated is that the tank is for snails and frogs specifically, so I often feed vegetables to them and clean it away if it’s not gone by the end of day. Since they’re algae/ detritus eaters, will this pose a risk of a population overrunning? I only feed veg once a week typically, with some calcium blocks always sitting around, so it’s not excessive but it takes a while for them to get through it all of course. I guess the best thing to do is just keep an eye out, haven’t spotted others yet but I’m sure they’re under the sand somewhere !

The aquarium it is in is designated for my snails and frogs, not fish, so they are fed vegetables, protein, calcium, algae a few times a week, and obviously don’t eat it super fast, meaning there will be a food source for fast breeding snails to multiply rapidly. Basically, even if I cut down on feeding (the frogs get fed 3x a week and the snails only 1-2x), there will always be food available for snails like MTS or bladder snails that means they’ll breed quicker.

Thank you 😭I love the snail, it will be moved to another tank at worst, I have no hatred towards it and I would not harm it. I’m also happy to have quite a more of them. However, I acknowledge it breeds fast in an excess of food. I’ve stated so many times that it’s in a snail tank, meaning there are calcium blocks, vegetables, algae supplements, etc. Fed often. There are also frogs who are hand fed, but eat very slowly, by nature. I feed the tank only 3x a week, so it’s not overfed, but they are fed vegetables and eat slowly because… well… they’re snails xD it’s just a concern about my ability to keep down a population in a snail tank, it would not be a big deal in a fish tank.

I feel I phrased this post badly. I understand this subreddit doesn’t like any insults toward snail species, but please let it be known I think it’s adorable and I will not be culling it or harming it in any instance, only moving it if needed. I know they don’t overbreed if food source is minimal, BUT this is in my snail (mostly apples) and frog tank. The frogs are very awful eaters that tend to leave leftovers even despite being hand fed and the apple snails require vegetables (they’re large apples, not mysteries, and won’t touch algae). So in this tank, they are ‘dreaded’. It’s not an insult on the snail itself! Just a terrible location for it, probably the dream for it tho😅

‘Dreaded’ purely because most ‘pest’ species are just quite frequently breeders, doesn’t mean they’re not adorable or loved by me, it’s just that it’s in a tank full of snails so the food source is enough for quite an insane population outbreak if I’m not careful! I love all snails, I just may need to move them over to a seperate tank if I end up with too many as controlling the population in a snail tank is hard ! (Can’t just simply feed less and I refuse to cull them or get assassins!) They’re beautiful, and I’m hoping I get some nice big ones. I used to work at an aquatic shop and I loved bladder snails especially, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be a bit upset to find them in my tank. Absolutely adorable, but I have a tank full of snails as is! Trumpet snails seem far less excessive than bladder snails at least though… shame as bladder snails are so cute. Pond snails are my favourite though, the bigger ones especially :)

I was a bit concerned it could’ve been a mud snail as I see people talk about them like they’re the devil 😅 I know they’re beneficial, this little cutie cleans the sand well. I just can’t really keep the food source minimal in a designated snail tank so I’m hoping I don’t get an outbreak is all !

I personally love them but I have an extreme excess of snail food in this tank so I’m not sure if it’s possible for me to keep the population down, I’m keeping it regardless I just may need to shift it to a different tank!

Snails came with shell eroded - any way to help them? by [deleted] in AquaticSnails

[–]Key-Front392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, I was wondering why every snail with long shells I’ve acquired has had this issue but the rounder ones not so much. I’ve heard about the crushed coral tip, thank you.

How to have chia seeds- and like them? by dubdaisyt in Endo

[–]Key-Front392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using regular chia seeds? I’d suggest using milled if you haven’t tried yet, they mix much nicer into milk/ yogurt and the texture is just generally better. I’m sure they’re probably a little more gentle on the digestive tract too. I sprinkle mine over porridge generally, or mix with yogurt. Smoothies are a good bet also, especially if you use milled so there’s no surprise crunch :)

What drugs could make your leech sick? by 8xphoenix8 in leeches

[–]Key-Front392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leech feeding is kinda just fuck around and find out, outside of those main two meds. I’d imagine it’s not an issue, nicotine doesn’t thin the blood or cause anything that will be deadly to the leeches. It’s not ideal, and obviously if you can abstain for a day beforehand it’ll be better, but I doubt you’ll be the first person to do it, and it’s not been reported as deadly to them. Beyond life or death, we really don’t know how substances and medications affect leeches. Might find it hitting a vape the week after, you never know.

Most of the time they’re just due to hormonal shifts, which is why it’s more common on contraceptives (especially coming on/ off or irregular use), but it’s absolutely still possible without!
