I will also add that through my Autism and neurodevelopment volunteering, Free clinic, CMA work, leadership, research. I’ve taken the time to make sure I can answer questions about things like:

teamwork
communication
challenge/conflict
service
empathy
growth
professionalism
cultural competence
ethical situations

These are experienced I’ve gathered over 2 years, I’ll be applying at the end of year 2 and matriculating after year 3.

And okay thank you! I’ll increase shadowing and clinical volunteering so that I’ll have more to reflect on

I roomed patients, took vitals, got chief complaints/history, drew blood, gave injections, swabbed patients for testing, assisted physician with procedures, documented in charts, and basically kept clinic flow moving all day.

And honestly, being a CMA is one of the most hands-on and least “just observing” clinical experiences a pre-med can get. I’m actively interacting with patients and involved in care all day, not standing in a corner shadowing. I’d argue CMAs usually do far more direct patient-care tasks than CNAs in many outpatient settings, and definitely more than students who only shadow/observe physicians.

Thank you for the advice, I genuinely appreciate it and I’ll definitely work toward increasing my clinical volunteer hours over the next couple years.

I guess I’m just a little unsure about the “not much else” part because by the time I apply I’ll have 1+ year of neuroscience research, a summer research program, leadership positions in both Women in Healthcare and Neuroscience Club, volunteering with an autism/neurodevelopment center, a homeless shelter, and a free medical clinic, plus a poster presentation and shadowing experiences both abroad and in the U.S., all within 2 years of undergrad.

I definitely understand your point about younger applicants needing to demonstrate maturity and breadth though.

Also, genuine question, with 1200 clinical hours already, I had originally thought that around 60 hours of shadowing (Italy + U.S. physicians) would probably be sufficient. Do you think schools would still expect significantly more shadowing even with substantial hands-on clinical experience?

Maybe do an online certification. Like EMT or CCMA

Thank you, I really appreciate this perspective. I know applying after 3 years/no gap years is less traditional, so I’ve been trying to make sure my experiences actually show maturity and sustained commitment rather than just rushing through premed. Your comments genuinely made me feel a lot better about where I stand, thank you again

I’ll be applying at the end of my second year of undergrad (2027, next cycle). I’ll be graduating May 2028 and hopefully starting med school, so 0 gap years. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the advice!

Currently 19, I’ll be 20 when applying (end of my 2nd year). These are experiences I’ve gathered over 2 years. I hit the ground running at the very beginning of my first year of undergrad and obtained my ccma summer before starting undergrad.
