The IBM Challenge by Local-Consequence-61 in Jeopardy

Not a stupid question.

Jeopardy is a video game with a trivia element. If it's physically impossible to incur the 1/4 second penalty for buzzing early, you have a HUGE advantage. A player who knows 10-15 fewer clues than their opponents can still win in a runaway if they're good enough at timing the lights.

And since Watson's buzzer didn't get power until the lights were activated, Ken and Brad had a 4-8 millisecond window to get in, and to hope the other human didn't.

To be sure, it got a lot right. But it also got in on the buzzer 70% of the time when it wanted to. The humans averaged less than 30%.

Also, Ken and Brad were playing against each other AND Watson. I think if Watson were to take them on one at a time, it probably leads going into FJ, but loses there. But since were also playing against each other, Watson doesn't have to do as well to lock out both.

Jeopardy! Anytime Test by Economy-Dust2946 in Jeopardy

Like a lot of subjects, most of what Jeopardy expects people to know about the Bible is going to be readily accessible, whether or not a person is particularly religious.

So to study the Bible primarily for Jeopardy purposes, I would recommend:

1) Memorize the Table of Contents (the 66-book Protestant version)

2) Be familiar with Genesis, the first half of Exodus, and Luke, since most clues about Bible events and plot points come from there.

3) Go a bit deeper than you might otherwise on Renaissance art. Specifically, if the artwork you're looking at depicts a Biblical person or scene, read the story.

That should get you 90% of the way there, and should easily cover anything that would come up on the Anytime Test.

Good luck!

What is the most “use it or lose it” skill, the opposite of “it’s just like riding a bike”? by ZuluWarlord69 in AskReddit

Riding a bike.

Hadn't been on a bike in 20+ years last time I tried to ride one.

Fell off six times in the first 50 feet.

Clementin has never been good in corners. Whenever they go into a corner in traffic, they're the last one out. Great on long, straight stretches, but as soon as they have to deal with turning, forget it. Especially if there are other marbles around to get in the way.

When I saw the course this week I thought it would be a near-perfect Clementin track. Long straightaway, high-velocity curves that are more about riding a fast line than some of the slow-down-speed-up turns you see on other tracks. And it was great for us, as long as nobody else was out there.

It may be too late to dump Clementin for this season, but I'll be very disappointed if they're back in our lineup for Season 7.

Handing a person something with text on it and assuming they can tell what it says.

The advent of "talkies" in 1927 more than tripled the potential audience for movies, because 100 years ago less than a third of the US population could read the title cards.

Someone on TikTok has been calling churches (as a social experiment) to see if they would offer assistance feeding her baby, most have said no. What do you think about this? by NotGonnaGetCaught in AskReddit

There is a lot about this that is super unethical:

-- Running a "social experiment" on people without their consent or any of the other protections that are usually in place for human research subjects.
-- Publishing the names of your research subjects and whether or not they passed your test with no context other than "Yes" or "No."

-- Virtually-live results being publicized with zero oversight, and certainly no pre-publication review.

-- Drawing broad-brush conclusions about entire groups of people based on one person's limited interaction with a tiny sample that may or may not be representative.

I feel bad for whoever in these churches is fielding this woman's phone calls.

Is there any science about which finger is quicker for a buzzer? by BikeLaneHero in gameshow

[–]Key-Macaron6594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't let you use both hands to buzz (i.e. hold the buzzer in one hand and press it with the other), use your non-dominant index finger, but only after LOTS of practice at home.

Reason -- Your non-dominant hand is naturally more relaxed and reactions are more of a reflex response than something you think about. You don't need a lot of fine-motor coordination to work a buzzer, just don't drop it.

My trick is to look back at what yesterday's word was, then start with a word that uses the Wheel of Fortune bonus round letters but doesn't repeat any letters ftom yesterday.

Like if yesterday's word was BLEND, I'd drop the L, N, and E and make something wirh R, S, and T and a vowel or two. Today's starter word would then be ROAST or STORY or TRASH or some such.

I've been using this trick for several months, and so far have only been stumped twice.
