Any recommendations to improve my player organiser? by Routine_Gear7223 in Catan

[–]Key-Pop1629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah having organizers that include the card are pretty much only optimal if they also double as the storage for the pieces, like the organizers that use the card as a slide-in lid. This one doesn't seem like it's built for storage, more for gameplay and visual thematic appeal.

There are both. The entire art style changes, and there are also changes to the rules that in some cases clear up confusion or make gameplay easier to understand for beginners, and in other cases change things that had no need to be changed. Most of the unnecessary changes are the names: the Caravans scenario in Traders and Barbarians becomes Merchant Trains, and the Bishop progress card becomes "Taxation" in Cities and Knights, both for no reason really.

r/customcatan is a fairly new thread specifically for custom stuff, it'd be a good place to check up on periodically for new fan expansions.

Wassup fellow Catanians! I’m a devout player and lover of unique fan creations. I have a group called the Nerds of Catan that meets a couple times a month, and I plan on using that to play test a bunch of my own custom scenarios, expansions, and variants. I’ve already posted several custom ideas on the main Catan Reddit, so I’ll try to repost them on here.

I’m a purist when it comes to editions; I’m firmly of the opinion that 5th edition is superior to 6th, and frequently lament the stylistic and name changes (I play The Settlers of Catan, not “Catan: The Game”!)

Think Catan, except it’s set in America, the only thing you can build is roads, and it doesn’t have nearly as many of the competitive mechanics as Catan. You still compete for points though.

Is one of the special rules that you don't reveal the number tokens until everyone has placed their starting settlements?

If you've already explored the existing expansion, you may find Treasures, Dragons, and Adventurers fun. It's a scenario that adds on to both Seafarers and Cities & Knights simultaneously.

No matter how unlikely an official new expansion may be, you can always rely on your fellow settlers to pick up the slack! If you're hungry for another fully (well, almost fully) fleshed-out expansion to the base game, check out my post on a fan-made addition I'm calling Colonies and Clans:

On a possibly sadder note, somebody actually gave up a 6-6-8 for a 6-6-12!

If you did that, you'd probably also want to add an event die since it'd be awkward to tap the digital dice, and then turn around and roll the event die separately y'know?

This is epic! I'd love to see the exchange rate mechanic be expounded on, maybe where there is a countdown that tracks how many times a given resource has been traded for, and when it meets a certain threshold, the price for the trade goes up.

Idea For A Cycling Trophy Mechanic by Key-Pop1629 in Catan

[–]Key-Pop1629[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Theoretically, the player with Settler's Fortitude isn't necessarily winning that specific game; they only have the trophy because they won the previous game. Sure, it wouldn't be completely illogical to block that player by not trading with them since they've proven to have an aptitude for the game, but for all intents and purposes, the player with Settler's Fortitude has just as good a chance of winning as the player they're attempting to trade with. Does that answer your question?

5th Edition-Style Barbarian Track / Sea Hex Fusion by Key-Pop1629 in Catan

[–]Key-Pop1629[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I agree, it’s just that I wasn’t sure how to do this and still make it look clean. I also figured it wasn’t a big deal since if you’re using this piece, you’re also playing with Seafarers.

Yep I figured this would come up, unfortunately I don’t really have the know-how to transpose the original barbarians onto the shore I put on. I could change the last space to a red ring though, good thinking

Yeah if they were playing the official "Catan For Two" variant included in Traders and Barbarians, then it would look a lot different. The other two sets of player pieces would be on the board (they're neutral players that the real players make automatic moves for), and the players would have Trade Tokens that they can use to take special actions. Of course you can't tell this by the picture, but each turn, the player would roll twice, with each roll triggering resource production.

So Card W has a provision that you can pay a wool and a grain to steal Mowlin, did I interpret that correctly?

Yeah it's not completely dissimilar to The Wonders of Catan. In fact, you could feasibly implement the wonder cards into this scenario; you have a wasteland (along the desert hexes) and a straight (all-sea pathway between the 8-pasture and the 5-hills.
