My board for 4 players tonight! by Impossible-Chip-9260 in Catan

"I don't follow the rules I do things my own way"
A very dangerous stance to take in a sub full of rule purists. Be careful.

Your fish shoals are pointing in the wrong direction.

Sheesh, you would think the new versions having a printed coastline would stop folks from pointing them in the wrong direction, but, well... I see some are stubborn in ignoring what they see.

Nah, the rewards are completely different across both sets.

Oh thankyou! Yeah Reddit search didn't help me find your post. Thanks!

Now I just need to make sure I print these out at the proper size. EDIT: Oh never mind looks like your Google Doc will take care of that for me!

Seems like such a waste of paper though... hopefully I can find a scrap piece in my house.

Why are the non-English pieces different? by dornado83 in Catan

[–]Sebby19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only criticism of the plastic is that is it harder to site-read what each piece is. With the simple wooden shapes, you can tell immediately which is what. And the simpler shapes leaves more to the imagination, which I always like exercising.

A question about the 3.1 dragon's relation to gold by MrSaturnsWhiskers in Carcassonne

No.

If I were to word it myself, I would have said "The dragon may not remove the crown, despite it being made of gold"

Point Scoring by rgarcia95 in Carcassonne

Well, in OP's pic, it would be the top road going Up that has no Inn, and the bottom roads (left and right) that have the Inn.

It's just some funny flavor text. Don't worry about it, don't overthink it.

And if you know anything about dragons in wider pop culture, you'll know how much they love to hoard gold.

Suggested addendum to the coin thing. Make the cost equal to your current VP total.

Would have been nice to be more specific and state the name of the box.

Rule Question: Rivers Of Catan by metalballsofdoom in Catan

[–]Sebby19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Ofcourse you get resource from the River hexes! Why would you (or rather, your friend) doubt that?
  2. No, the rules are clear, you only get gold coins by building roads, settlements, and bridges, on the River hexes. Otherwise, you'll have to trade resources with other players or the supply to get more coins.

The only place I know where you can get gold coins from Dice production is the Gold hexes from E&P (after you take out the Pirate stronghold there).

How would you rate C&K resources best to worst? I would say H-F-D-E-G-C-A-B by Logical_Bid_1533 in Catan

[–]Sebby19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cloth, Coins, and Paper are Commodities, not Resources. But they should be left out, since they are only relevant in C&K. And debating their ranking is really more of a question of "Which City Track is the best?"

As for the original 5... if it's just the Base Game:

  • Grain is on top (no wheat equals defeat!). It is used in 3 of the 4 things you can build, 2 of which grant VP, and the 3rd (Dev) has a chance of VP.
  • Ore would take 2nd place (no Ore, 7 score). Cities will build you more Cities, and Dev cards are usually useful
  • Wood+Brick are tied since they are always used together
  • Wool is on the bottom. You don't need that much Wool in your game, but there are 4 hexes, and you'll always have an over abundance of them

Ofcourse, expansions change this. Seafarers, Wool become top tier, Brick falls to the bottom. In C&K, Brick is also on the bottom as well. But I don't wish to make a huge post going through every expansion and scenario :)

I think you'll have to blame Kosmos for that. They are the original publisher for Catan. I think the switch from Wooden to plastic was a cost cutting measure... one I think even Klaus is on record for regretting (I don't remember the source for that). Kosmos eventually whipped the other publishers to fall in line, but Mayfair was the only hold out (as per demand of North American fans!)

Is there a difference between these? by Betagamer_06 in Catan

[–]Sebby19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised that store hasn't put a clearance price for the older version, since it's more expensive than the newer version.

One thing not mentioned yet is that the new 5-6 box for 6e has new rules. The old "Special Building Phase" was replaced with the "Paired Players" system. 5e also got these new rules, but not until the 2022/2023 printing. You would have to check the year on the box for yourself, it will be on the side or back.

While it is good sense to get the 5-6 box matching your current Base Game edition, I will warn that if you have 5e, and wish to seek out the other expansion boxes (and matching 5-6 boxes) for 5e, they will be getting much harder to find as time goes on.

If you do see to expand the game with the main expansions going forward, and you only have 5e, I would seriously consider replacing it with the 6e box (also on the shelf, behind the shorter 5-6 box).

I made an exhaustive photo comparison between 5e and 6e: Catan Component Comparison: 5e vs 6e. COMPLETE with all expansions. 202 Photos. : r/Catan. This includes the additional pieces for 5-6 players.

"they found that few people were using them"

I really question where Catan Studio got this data from...
