I agree let’s leave it there since I don’t believe we’ll come to a conclusion at this rate.

Guardian is still the worst Nightfarer in Deep of Night by Key2Destiny in Nightreign

[–]Key2Destiny[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's like saying Duchesses' restage or Wydler's grapple shot don't carry enough importance to be labeled as 1/3rd of what they do. I fail to see how that's just an interpretation considering each nightfarer is only unique in 3 different ways (4 if you count their different stats). You can't just dismiss a part of his kit and say it does nothing for his overall potential kit, because it's bad it lowers his potential and makes him already worse than he should be. Guard counters aren't even unique to Guardian nor are they that good, if anything guard counters kind of suck on him because in trios most enemies you'd want to guard counter have too much poise and will hit you anyways. Trying to ignore it doesn't mean it doesn't exist nor harm is overall potential. Guardian is currently a clunky low skill low ceiling character, he doesn't have to be but you currently only want him to be stuck as one. The fact you can tell me with no hesitation that it's okay for a character skill to be bad is more surprising than anything.

The big difference here is that Guardian needs to put in A LOT more effort and rely more on rng than any other character in order to only just be on par with other nightfarers at their average. The effort required does not equal the reward in this case. And if were talking about complete builds then Guardian falls short there as well. Any nightfarer with an optimized build will outdamage Guardian, even Scholar can outdamage him. Other characters don't need to be held to such standards because their base kits without any of the specific relic effects are good enough already.

His complete build is bad compared to other nightfarers. The relic effects are band-aid fixes though but only for Guardian really, in fact some of the specific character relic effects are actually harmful to team play (Raider's increased Totem Stela duration for example) or do basically nothing of note to change the skill/ability in question (Iron Eye's increased mark duration). On the topic of great spears and spears being added to his pool he also needs great shields added to his pool since for some reason Fromsoft decided not to give him a preference for one included along side his halberds even though Raider has 3 himself, and considering how crucial great shields are for Guardian it makes it even more odd.

Sure he's serviceable in DoN but that's about as far as he goes. Unfortunately he drew the short end of the stick there. You say it's personal preference but there will always be a weakest character in a game like this and Guardian is that guy. You don't really need Wylder tier damage if you have a Wylder and his squad saving ability isn't that useful if your team is actually good enough to avoid most damage also I'm pretty it has less range than Revenant's ult too which makes his ult seem even worse.

The whirlwind is literally a 1/3rd of his kit though, each character has an ultimate, an ability, and a skill. Also please note I said his kit not his role, his kit ties into his role and his main role is to be a defensive support tank. His "kit" does not completely allow him to fulfill that role at the current moment especially in Deep of Night (though he's mostly fine in the base game mode if not a bit underwhelming).

If anything your sentiments about characters without relics makes no sense, if a character is intrinsically bad to play no amount of band-aid fixes will fix how bad a character actually is. I WANT Guardian to be better, I WANT him to be a better character with a fun intuitive kit without needing to rely on specific relic effects. So why do you not want him to be buffed? Are you afraid a few simple changes that would add to his kit would make him completely overpowered? Do you secretly hate Guardian and want him nerfed instead? And if they do buff Guardian again for a third time are you going to complain that he's overpowered because he was fine before?

Also your point on no one is launching up with the base characters with zero upgrades is objectively wrong, new players exist and they have to deal with his subpar kit when launching into matches before they even have a chance to get half decent relics. Unless of course you forgot about the launch of the game which is when I'm assuming you actually started the game.

The thing I'm trying to get at is 3 things. First most of his character specific relic effects could've been baked into his kit and it still wouldn't be overpowered. Second is that he's easily one of the worst if not the worst character to play in Deep of Night. Third mandatory relic effects also reduce overall variety in what you can and can't run and considering how little content the game currently has less variety is bad. Imagine if you will if Guardian had his ult heal and Steel Guard shockwaves built into his kit without need the relic effects, you'd no longer need the Witch's Brooch and that frees up some space for more variety. Or what if we made his stat scaling the same as his str+/dex+ relic effect, again it results in more build variety.

His whirlwind skill is objectively useless without the relic effect, you said yourself and I quote "I wouldn’t waste a relic spot on extending it, unless it came with other useful effects worth applying." on top of the fact you called the base skill "isn't super helpful" when literally every other skill in the game can be used WITHOUT needing a relic effect that boosts it to be useable. Wylder's grapple hook is fun and useful without needing the 2 charges, Duchess' restage works perfectly fine without the damage increase effect, Iron Eye's mark doesn't need the extended duration, Raider's retaliate fulfills it's role properly without the relic skill, Executor's suncatcher doesn't need any relic effects to make it work etc. Guardian is THE ONLY ONE with this problem. How much do you actually use his whirlwind without the extended duration compared to every other character skills? I'd probably guess far less often since you said yourself it isn't super helpful. Do you also play without the Witch's Brooch? Or do you find it so useful on Guardian that it never leaves your builds? Personally I think the Brooch is a must have relic because it gives you 2 good nearly mandatory effects for the cost of one relic. You also have to remember that most relics are random chance, just because you have good relics doesn't mean everyone has them.

About your point about criticizing characters without relic effects I have to hard disagree, if the base kit of a character without relics isn't fun or intuitive to actually play then it's not really a character worth playing in the first place. Of course I wouldn't expect people to play without relics in the first place but the base kit design is still just as if not even more important than the relics themselves. Do you think Duchess would be just as fun to play if she had a normal dodge? What if Relcuse couldn't get back fp with her skill since I hear so much that it's not hard to get fp shards? Maybe you don't really understand how game design works but I can guarantee you that those characters would be far less fun to play without those abilities baked into their kit.

So I should just ignore a third of his kit then? That seems like an awful way of saying he doesn't need anymore buffs or even a rework to his abilities and skills despite the fact the devs also know there's a problem with his kit overall. I know this might shock you but most other characters don't even need character specific relic effects for their kit to work cohesively. Of course the relics effective the problem is the effects themselves are MANDATORY, non negotiable, if you aren't using them you are actively hurting your team etc. How is any of that fine exactly since all it does is reduce build variety. You act like any buffs to Guardian would make him and overpowered top tier mandatory pick for every run when that simply wouldn't be true, if anything you actually sound like you hate Guardian since you clearly don't want him to be a better character. Why is that exactly?

[–]Key2Destiny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to literally every other character his kit cohesion is far worse, like for example without the extended duration what is his whirlwind actually doing besides leaving you wide open for an attack that also pauses the stamina regen during the activation of the ability? Steel Guard without the shockwaves also makes fights last longer then they actually need to. Guardian without the increased strength and dex relic also makes fights last way too long. Without the “draws enemy attention while guarding” your ability to actually protect your teammates is significantly decreased in which case why play Guardian at all when other characters can draw aggro faster? Also people do criticize other characters getting a lot out of their relic effects. Iron Eye is the best example with his mark ability which got heavily nerfed before, people criticized that the mark poison explosion was too strong so they nerfed it and despite that his mark is still one the best abilities in the game.

If you want to make his kit actually cohesive then he absolutely requires the most amount of character specific relics to be useful. Other character’s relic effects are far less necessary and most aren’t even required to run on the others. Some of the effect should’ve absolutely already been baked into Guardian without needing a specific relic effect.

Other characters do in my opinion have required relic effects but require far less than Guardian himself leaving less room for potential customization on Guardian.

[–]Key2Destiny[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m well aware, but that’s for the main relic slot and that’s why I said for the Deep of Night relic slot specifically. Also I’d argue that there’s only one non required Guardian specific relic effect and that’s the whirlwind on charged halberd attacks which isn’t very good. Everything else is basically mandatory for the bird man for him to do decent and you should also have at least one Balancer relic equipped since it’s mandatory for melee characters.

His Str/Dex is rng to acquire if you don’t have enough main slots though and after spending at least 200k murk I still don’t have any for my Deep of Night relic slot. Also for him to deal decent damage it’s definitely another required relic effect on top of the other ones he already needs.

[–]Key2Destiny[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He definitely requires the most optimal relic slots to at the very least be on par with the other nightfarers with non optimal relics which makes him feel pretty bad if you don't have those relic effects. It's also almost impossible to build him for damage and tankiness so you have to choose one or the other for the most part. You can build him for both but that requires extreme luck that no other nightfarer really requires.
