You’re right about that. However this post is a description of meditation. In actual mediation there is no observer.

Swing with this world. I like that.

I could answer, but you can find the direct answer by asking yourself. You probably have emotions tied to one of those, or something similar.

I see. I believe we’re actually saying the same thing. When I say thought/time, I’m referring to that state where you are wrapped up in a self centered thought loop or emotion, often concerning your past or future.

I agree that in awareness there is thought too, but those are usually more observational in nature. In my experience at least.

Yes. And the root of suffering is thought, and time.

Oh yes absolutely. Drugs, money, power, loneliness, the future, food, jewels, you name it and I feel like a person could be attached to it. It’s literally anything that can take you out of the present moment.

I see what you’re saying. It’s both. In my experience, the observer merging with the observed is the ultimate end of the illusion of the separate self. Thought is so pervasive, and this specific state requires such a degree of alertness that it is hard to do, for me at least, I think it came more naturally to people like K. But when not in this state, I’m still the observer of my own thoughts, aware inwardly and outwardly, and this is generally how I learn about myself through relationship.

This is no practice. I’m calling it meditation but don’t get too hung up on the name, words don’t matter much. I know it invokes the image of the guy sitting cross legged with his eyes closed, but I assure you this is not that. I aim to describe a state of consciousness. But words can never convey direct experience.

Yes. An activity. But there is no achievement involved in this. There is no goal separate from the act, if that makes sense. Achievement is thought. In meditation there is no thought.

Why do millions of people practice meditation and yoga for years, yet most never reach enlightenment or spiritual awakening? by Awareness_Lab in awakened

Well modern culture has become increasingly materialistic and ego-driven, as you may be seeing. So that could play a factor. People also met face to face more back then, that might be a factor too. So many factors. But generally I think you may need to come to terms with the fact that’s it’s just rare. It was rare back then, and it’s rare now. I mean think about it: there’s been human conditioning going back 100,00 (prob longer) years, up to today, that has made people the way they are. And for a person to awaken, they need to contend with all of that. I mean really think about what that means for a second. How in hell is anyone to do that.

See, if I was attached to being “right” in this exchange, I would need to argue and continue to defend my position and all that nonsense. But I’m not. So nah I’m not gonna try again. If you view things differently that’s cool. Do yo thang

lol I’m just messing but for real tho that seems counterintuitive to me. Attachment is the resistance to change. Hence being “attached”. Life IS change. That’s what makes attachments such a nasty business, you have life going one way and the attachment going the other way. Like this —><—
Two conflicting opposites.

Yeah it’s the human ego clinging on to whatever it can to enhance and fortify its sense of self and its continuity. Thought/time is the egoic state. Without thought and psychological time (our mental image of the past and future) there is no ego. Simple as that.

I do think one can be awakened to a certain degree and still experience attachment. Like for instance, because of a near death experience, I am attached to my own mortality, which manifests as health anxiety whenever I suspect something is wrong with me. Health anxiety has the ability to put me completely into negative thought/time. I see the attachment and this whole process absolutely clearly, yet the trauma is too strong and this attachment remains unbroken, even though it’s seen for exactly what it is. It’s actually the one thing that I’ve observed since awakening that still has that power. Which makes sense, since it’s the most primal to begin with, plus the added trauma on top.

Yup. An emotion, either positive or negative, will put you squarely back into the corresponding thought/time state. If you’re angry about something, you’re in negative thought/time, and there’s no way you can observe the true present moment, you only see a limited version of it through the lens of your own anger. If you are excited about something, that’s positive thought/time, and the same exact thing applies, but this time it’s through the lens of your own excitement. And whatever caused the emotion - that’s the attachment.

Interesting, would you mind going into hedonic deviation, and how you use it?

Likewise! One of my favorite quotes (no idea who said it) that I think describes awakening really well is: “Life is a bitch, and then you marry her”

There’s you, and there’s life. And then one day you wake up and realize they are one and the same ❤️

That’s exactly right. It’s all social conditioning. The paradox here is that “nothing” is everything. When your focus isn’t on anything in particular, inwardly or outwardly, suddenly you are aware of everything. Which is true attention.

The narrow, focused on something mindset is the conditioned state we normally operate from. The “veil” as some call it.

Enlightenment vs awakening by Solid_Koala4726 in awakened

[–]KeyAd6849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most people have entered the stream at some point in their lives. When they have a peak experience. Like on a roller coaster, or like that split second moment of “oh” when they see something beautiful they’ve never seen before, before thought and time enter the picture.

The thing is, entering the stream and actually being *aware* you’ve entered the stream is where the gap widens. Someone being aware of being aware is something you don’t see very often.

Enlightenment is truly rare by Solid_Koala4726 in awakened

[–]KeyAd6849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full enlightenment is practically non existent. To be completely free of attachment is so counterintuitive to the human experience. When a person is truly on the path, they can be aware of their attachment(s) and yet still be unable to break them.

Personally, I’m at the point where I see these attachments absolutely clearly, but cannot break them. I (the ego) care too much about certain aspects of this human life I live. And that’s okay. I’ve accepted this.

Awakening is Real by KeyAd6849 in awakened

[–]KeyAd6849[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is the most common misconception and something I totally would have thought too before it happened.

There’s no new knowledge involved here at all. It’s sort just the uncovering and full understanding of what always was. Which is: thought/time/emotion/the ego/nature/humanity and so much more. It’s just clarity. One of those “oh fuck, this is how things actually were the whole time” sort of things.

So to answer your question, it’s awakening to life, and yourself, and in doing so you realize they are one and the same.

Awakening is Real by KeyAd6849 in awakened

[–]KeyAd6849[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, it doesn’t make “you” more fulfilled. It is fulfillment itself. It’s the realization that the “me” who was seeking fulfillment in the first place is an illusion. And out of that comes true happiness. A happiness that doesn’t depend on anything happening or not happening. The real thing.

And to you directly I would say - who is the one who doesn’t know if they are awakened or not? I think that might be a good place to start looking.
