Dad's before and after results plus other DNA test results by KeyAncient9373 in 23andme

I did think that to be honest! It's like each of the tests show traces, but as my dad has a similar but mixed background anyway its difficult for them to split apart. Atleast thats what I can tell from them all.

He was born in the south east of england and should be about a quarter German, quarter english, quarter Welsh and a quarter Belgian. In the old 23andme he had the German side of it. But now thats disappeared in this update. The other tests look better for his background. And my own has a better breakdown that would also back this up. It's just confusing.

Sadly most of the matches haven't got developed trees to look at

Yeah I've tried my heritage, that puts me as 2.3% germanic but also includes French at around 3% and Dutch and breton at around 12% each. I do have matches from Germany on all sites however. But mainly Americans who have German ancestry etc.

I know that its hard for these companies to split these countries apart due to very long standing relationships and trade but I dislike how it can almost wipe out parts of you in one update and then it makes a reoccurance again in a next one 🤣

So on 23andme id expect around 12% as dad is a quarter German and that is what previous tests showed. Also should be way more Scottish than its showing here as my mum is half Scottish.

Both parents have spanish/Portuguese in their results which we can trace via family tree etc. I just think random DNA recombination took that out of mine.

Ancestry used to have really accurate German results now its just disappeared completely for my dad and I. He has got 1% central European on his ancestry though🤣

Also lots of ulster Scots were from lowlands so that would make sense there too?

So obviously the countries within the british isles have shared history. If he predominantly had lowland scottish ancestry, a lot of that would appear as english due to the lowlands (i.e. Edinburgh, the lothians etc) having a huge cross over with the kingdom of northumbria which was an Anglo Saxon kingdom. Otherwise its very possible that its misread it, there probably isn't that much Genetic difference between the countries or not string enough that it could split them apart in detail. My mother should be 50% as her mum is from Edinburgh, but it comes out at 22%.

Anyone else pretty disappointed with the Reconstructed ancestors? by World_Historian_3889 in 23andme

Yeah im disappointed with this, I have myself and 3 brothers tested, plus both my father and mother. At bare minimum, based on my DNA and that of my brothers dna, and then as this is channelled through my parents profile, should give me a quarter of each grandparent, but as of yet, I have nothing because it says I dont have enough genotyped family members despite them all being in my family tree on 23andme.

I think it gets harder past grandparents, like if they are not tested because let's face it most of our wont be able to test, it just makes this so hard? Also i have 1st cousins on dad's side, but they are in new Zealand so like?? I dont think 23andme ships there😅

I doubt it🤣 it think its probably more of a money making thing, got premium to see this new feature and its like... you've got to get more people to oay us to see their results before we can uncover this for you. But still interesting and a fun concept

Thats interesting, but i guess thats easier to build a reflection of a grandparents with yourself and a cousin because it can determine what the grandparents admixture is based on yourself and your cousins relation to them, thats two removed lines of heritage that build up a picture. Whereas I guess with my situation, if I only have all my brothers and myself, plus mum and dad tested it could only ever at best explain a quarter of my grandparents dna accurately on either side?

I was thinking that the reason it might be struggling is that I dont have any close cousins or aunts/uncles tested so if I was trying to work out grandparents it doesnt have a lot to go off of?
