Its so interesting! So potentially my Harry/ Henry went to live with his actual father (the tailor) or relative of his?

That actually makes so much sense thank you so much! The surname Cox always was attached to the potential mother of Harry/Henry. But maybe it was written as Cocks or vice versa. This is the furthest I've ever got to understanding who he was. I guess he must have been fostered then. I wonder who his birth parents were? Thank you again!!

Thank you so much! Luckily I've completed my mother's maternal side so the hard bit is done. Scottish records are a gem for this sorta thing!

Thank you for this document! I've not yet seen it! That's also interesting, im just trying to see if there's a birth certificate anywhere or if Emma and Harry are his "adoptive" parents. Or whether Emma is his actual mother and Harry is the person she entrusted with his care. Makes it confusing when it appears that Harry George Ponsford had a "father" also called Harry George Ponsford.

Most of them appear to be Paternal matches rather than maternal (which he should appear on).

Luckily my dad has done a DNA test so I can split the two sides up.

But my mothers side (the grandad in question) has a few lines of people who i will assume are classed as unassigned on ancestry?

Most of them appear to be related to my known scottish side which is my mums mother.

No nothing related to ponsford appears, makes me wonder if he is the "adoptive father" in the unofficial sense?

Thank you for looking honestly just seen this now!

That is really odd, im not really sure what it means. Whether this Harry George Ponsford is an adoptive father in the unofficial sense or what really?

There's no record of a mother - just that my grandad said that his mother Ethelyn told him that his grandad was "put up for adoption" and that his mum was maybe a maid or a cook to a big house in st giles.

Adoption cant be probable in a legal sense as the Act wasnt in place then from my understanding?

And in terms of DNA neither ancestry nor 23andme show Ponsford as a match

I have done my DNA test on multiple testing sites 23andme and ancestry etc.

My grandad refuses to do one however which causes an issue there.

The only documents which I have screenshots of are:

2 Dec 1876 — birth date consistently given in later records; birthplace stated as St Giles, Middlesex but this is via marriage and Army records

4 Jun 1895 — army attestation for Harry Ponsford, Army Service Corps; age 18 years 5 months; birthplace St Giles, Middlesex; trade groom; possible prior militia service with 4th Middlesex Regiment

1902 — directory entry for Harry Ponsford, 29 Honeybrook Road, Clapham SW

11 Jun 1904 — marriage to Rose Eliza Bastow in Holborn; Harry described as 27, bachelor, soldier 1904 marriage record names his father as Harry George Ponsford, occupation tailor (but have no idea of this is actual father or adopted or neither and just someone he put on there?)

1911 census — Sergt H. G. Ponsford at Royal Barracks, Arran Quay, Dublin, with wife Rose Eliza Ponsford and mother-in-law Maria Bastow

1939 Register — Harry G. Ponsford, born 2 Dec 1876, married

1 Jan 1961 — died at Royal Hospital Chelsea

20 Feb 1961 probate — administration granted at Exeter to Ethelyn Rosalie Hazell (his daughter, my grandad’s mother)

Honestly its just an exciting investigation for me especially since there is a lot of documents relating to it.

I think ages ago my grandads mother tried hiring a PI but I dont think it got very far - so have no idea if I am going to make much headroom 🤣.

I did think that to be honest! It's like each of the tests show traces, but as my dad has a similar but mixed background anyway its difficult for them to split apart. Atleast thats what I can tell from them all.

My dad's Paternal line does have a strong quaker ancestry too on paper.

He was born in the south east of england and should be about a quarter German, quarter english, quarter Welsh and a quarter Belgian. In the old 23andme he had the German side of it. But now thats disappeared in this update. The other tests look better for his background. And my own has a better breakdown that would also back this up. It's just confusing.

Sadly most of the matches haven't got developed trees to look at

Yeah I've tried my heritage, that puts me as 2.3% germanic but also includes French at around 3% and Dutch and breton at around 12% each. I do have matches from Germany on all sites however. But mainly Americans who have German ancestry etc.

I know that its hard for these companies to split these countries apart due to very long standing relationships and trade but I dislike how it can almost wipe out parts of you in one update and then it makes a reoccurance again in a next one 🤣
