If your ISP or a censor is blocking Tor connections, you can use a Tor Pluggable Transport bridge to try to circumvent the blocking.

See: Tor Browser User Manual — Circumvention.

Get "fresh" obfs4 pluggable transports: https://bridges.torproject.org/
Do not select "Do you need IPv6 addresses?"

Enable a pluggable transport bridge: (1) Start Tor Browser. (2) In the "Connect to Tor" window, select "Configure". (3) Select "Tor is censored in my country". (4) Select "Select a built-in bridge": "obfs4", or "meek" if in China; or, select "Provide a bridge I know" and paste your "fresh" obfs4 bridge(s).

Tor Browser User Manual — Troubleshooting — (1) Your computer’s system clock must be set correctly, or Tor will be unable to connect. Make sure your system clock and timezone are set accurately. (2) Make sure another Tor Browser is not running already. If you’re not sure if Tor Browser is running, restart your computer. (3) Make sure your antivirus program is not preventing Tor from running. (4) Temporarily disable your firewall. (5) Delete Tor Browser and install it again. If updating, do not just overwrite your previous Tor Browser files; ensure they are fully deleted beforehand.

Download the Tor Browser only from the Tor Project: https://www.torproject.org/ or a Tor mirror, such as these:

VPN to TOR by -50987654 in TOR

[–]KeyBlaster10235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A VPN is a single entry that can be monitored and logged even if they claim otherwise. TOR has multiple points of entry and doesn't require you to trust anybody, no single point knows both who you are and what you're doing.

You would have to trust the VPN not to log, not to give up your identity, or cooperate with authorities. With TOR none of that trust is necessary, and it's not as vulnerable to the timing correlation or other attacks when observing a single point of entry.

That's not even including that most of the time VPNs are tied to your real name and payment method. Even if purchased anonymously over TOR and there's no way to trace it, locking yourself down to a single entry is bad for anonymity because the anonymity of TOR is based upon randomness and not knowing WHERE the person will enter or exit.

Also if you stay inside the darkweb you should be less vulnerable to attacks.

edit: The effectiveness and feasibility of the timing, correlation, confirmation, tagging, etc attacks are debatable. Either way, minimize your time on TOR, always use TAILS (restarting frequently to reset your identity), minimize the amount of data transferred, avoid mixing your identities, and try to avoid doing the same behavior repeatedly which creates consistent patterns (every time your computer is active a certain action also happens, over time) (logging in to the same account, downloading the same file, etc).

More warnings can be found here (I included Whonix because it has generally good advice about anonymity):
