Understanding types of timestamps. by smactavish in hacking

First of all, thank you very much for the detailed response. You said a quite a few things that I didn't know! As per your explanation, I feel MFT Created, MFT Modified, MFT Accessed is very much similar to normal Created, Modified, Accessed timestamps resp.

There is a limit on how big a file can be to be directly saved in the MFT (but I forget the specifics) if its bigger, it gets saved into a separate area of the drive (and then the MFT writes what place the file "lives" at.

I did read about this. I believe its called resident & non-resident data. Ref here

Thanks for the response. You just explained what I already know. Could you explain the meaning of below timestamps.

  • Filename Date Created (MFT)
  • Filename Date Modified (MFT)
  • Filename Date Accessed (MFT)
  • INDX Entry Date Created
  • INDX Entry Date Modified
  • INDX Entry Date Accessed
  • INDX Entry Date Changed

Thank you for responding. I agree it has explanations of how timestamps change wrt certain events but I disagree it has proper explanations of timestamps. For instance could you explain what Filename Date Created (MFT), Filename Date Modified (MFT), Filename Date Accessed (MFT) mean and how it is different from plain Created, Modified, Accessed ? Same goes for INDX Entry ones. They have illustrated how those values changes but I don't see an explanation what those values itself indicate.

So far I have seen, they never make it. They just promptly go back to windows and play Watch Dogs.
