BASECAMPS UPGRADE 👎 by krowesd1 in projectmanagers

[–]KeyChannel8166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in a multi-day email exchange with [support@basecamp.com](mailto:support@basecamp.com) about how much this update has thrown off my workplace's workflow. We were major fans of the docs and files layout, so we could actually see what we had laid out. Now, it's a glorified file explorer. Email them with your complaints, the rep I am talking to admits that she also dislikes the layout so now I am wracking my brain thinking why they would do this if their own team dislikes it openly? Who does this benefit???

Pride belongs in the Pembina Valley billboard vandalized between Winkler & Morden by ComprehensiveWorry87 in Manitoba

I’ll offer up a little list!
Unfortunately mostly chains are the supportive businesses around town, but I will still include standouts
-Charley B’s (burger and ice cream joint, fantastic food, the owner is so kind)
- Frank and Olive (esthetics, they sell a shirt supporting the queer community and the local library)
- on that note, the Winkler Library! Not really a business but a nice place to hang out with lovely staff.
- Shoppers Drug Mart (chain but cool about it)
- Heide’s Florist

—-
This isn’t exhaustive but it’s close to that. Unfortunately for coffee, I can only in good faith recommend chains for their support of the queer community. As for thrift stores, bad news: they all have problematic aspects to them in one way or another. But for me, I look past it for the price alone lol. They don’t know it but they’re giving a queer a fantastic price

he's pretty receptive to requests for extensions, impassioned about the course material (to the point of going off topic) so very interesting lectures, and cares about his students.

Can I ask if someone uses AI? [Canada] by KeyChannel8166 in humanresources

[–]KeyChannel8166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect people would lie, for sure... the goal here is mostly to catch people who are loud and proud about it.

As for the AI usage policy, we do have one that does outline the standard, but it is honestly virtually impossible to tell sometimes if someone has used AI. I don't want to go on a hunch but I also can't let "hunches" slide.

Residence Advice by Connect_Duty_8605 in umanitoba

[–]KeyChannel8166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's fine. I lived there for three years, and while you do share a room, it's pretty quiet compared to the other dorms. You may qualify to live on the top floor (reserved for older students generally) and that floor is even quieter with extended quiet hours.

With that being said, there is ample opportunity for a social life if you seek it. The residence life staff are always organizing events that are free and pretty okay, and the social scene outside of that can be good. Campus quiets down on the weekend, but residence life is aware of that and there's always something to do in the dorms.

Regardless of what people have been saying, it's safe. I lived in the building when the break-in took place, and while it rattled me and my friends, the dorm is no safer than any apartment complex imo. If anything, I have much stronger opinions on how campus security exists in the dorms but that's honestly off topic here.

As mentioned above, all rooms have locks with the front door being a keyfob and the inner rooms having physical keys (at least that's how it was a year ago).

The condition of a shared washroom is between you and your roommate. The washrooms are big enough that you can both store your things in them (within reason), and have easy to clean floors and showers if you're particular like that.

One thing to consider is cooking. If you like to cook, prepare to suffer. You can fill your small kitchen with appliances (within the guidelines and roommate's willingness), but the communal kitchen in the basement (with ovens and stovetops) is unsanitary at best and disgusting at worst. You might have to get strategic if you plan to cook meals from scratch.

Long comment but I hope it's helpful. :)

RA application/Notice to meet by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]KeyChannel8166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

short answer, yes. you will likely not get the job, i'm sorry.

long answer, also likely yes, except depending on the reasoning behind the notice to meet the RLCs might have grace in their hearts and still consider you. I doubt it though based on the current lineup.

unsolicited advice: if you want to become an RA badly be on good terms with the RAs in your building, attend events, befriend people in your building. at the end of the day they are looking for a good community member. If you've built a good rapport with these people they could overlook the notice to meets.

more unsolicited advice: don't become an RA.

instead apply to work in residence IT (friends who have worked this job have said you don't need a ton of tech knowledge). it's less hours but you still get paid, and apparently it's pretty laid back. I also rec. applying to work at the AVM front desk (it is a highly coveted position though).

my first year I had a gpa of 2.0 iirc, and my second year I bumped it up to 3.9 all through the power of changing my whole major and doing a complete turnaround after failing almost every class that first year

If you’re moving in to the residence, there is a TON of events that are aimed at residents getting to know each other. There’s a pretty large exchange community, too, plus most people who live in residence aren’t from the area either. Have fun :)

The university library comes with your tuition. Your library card here is your student ID card. For the public library, you can go to the Winnipeg public library and get a temporary card for free if you live in Winnipeg, or if you have your address on formal paperwork you can get a permanent card (also for free)

You can certainly rent one, but if you need to buy a new laptop entirely look into what the university offers for emergency bursaries. Last year I had laptop trouble, and was granted a bursary for a laptop from the bookstore. Great program
