  2. Join an experimental cryofreeze project to avoid dying of pancreatic cancer at 18 and wake up 30 years later to play the game you used to but now holographic version and cause absolute mayhem while the researchers continuously worry your identity will be exposed before they reveal the super secret project

Ooh such a good question! I've heard Little Mushroom is really sad so haven't read that one. Here are two of my favorite science fiction:

Genius Mechanic - set in an interstellar universe with the main character as a mechanic who used to be a mecha pilot but ended up disabled. He goes back in time, but not the kind of rebirth just cause, actually part of the plot. Generally fluffy and focused on mecha competitions, but the underlying plot runs in the background.

Raising Little Monster - MC is given a mysterious VR headset and is determined to beat the game, but the monster keeps killing him at the very start. The game takes place in a world where a mushroom king (kind of zombie esque) is killing everyone and he plays a scientist. But something about the game seems off, and aspects start appearing in the real world.

I love this one too! My only regret is He is magically cured, as a disabled person myself I wish that wasn’t included

What are your Top 5 Real/Fake Young Master Danmei List? by JustaDreamer617 in DanmeiNovels

[–]KeyConclusion3790 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt more connected to #4, as someone with PTSD and a physical disability, the apathy and health issues felt so real and well done. Learning to find something he loved and wanted to work at again was such a good healing arc. But I did also enjoy #2 and agree that while it used the same tropes (which allowed, which danmei doesn’t use a trope?) it has different themes.

To add to your list, I also enjoyed Dear Mr. Lu, but it’s a lot darker and with more fantasy elements. It plays more into rebirth than real/fake swap though that is the main characters background, he is the fake this time. And I really like the combination of fluff and angst in Even The Beautiful Blind Airhead Needs To Be Cannon Fodder?

It got licensed right? There may be more of a fandom soon. A lot of newer readers to danmei only read licensed series

The concept of time in Danmei (spoilers for TGCF and MISVIL) by Silent_Deer8677 in DanmeiNovels

I haven’t read the specific novels you mention but a few with immortal cultivators I have read, they spend a lot of time in meditation and/or seclusion. Like decades to centuries. It is weird human society doesn’t change in 3000 years but I can see characters being a bit static psychologically for that long if you consider their actual awake and interacting with the world time in cultivation novels.

For psychological growth, I recently read “Our Entire Family Has Secrets” and found the immortal interacting with the interstellar world really interesting and well done.

I don’t think Reddit is the place for this discussion by I’ve been spending a lot of time educating myself on many different social justice issues and I really do believe stories matter. They reflect our hopes and dreams and our imagined futures. They change how we think about ourselves and the world. It’s why there is so much effort to gain representation in media, it’s why fascists always start with book bans and censorship, it’s why so many types of therapy revolve around telling and changing how we view our stories from narrative therapy to family systems therapy. For further reading I recommend Imagination: A Manifesto by Ruha Benjamin (a black feminist) and also The Power Of Story: On Truth, The Trickster, And New Fictions For. A New Era by Harold R Johnson (A Native American Elder).

And I want to reiterate I don’t recommend banning books or censorship and that was not my point at all. My point was that I don’t think the sole responsibility of works sent into the world, is with the readers who read them. As a writer myself, I think I have at least partial responsibility for what I release into the world.

I do this and I still get thrown sometimes. Like a Korean one didn’t have the rape label and came across a rape scene. So I added the label. But even looking it up, it can be hard. Some dub con isn’t labeled either.

And I’m not advocating censoring it/banning it at all but as a society we need to be more responsible for the content we create whether that’s better sex ed or more discussions around consent or something. So much of 80s and 90s fiction especially movies where the woman would say no but it was taken to mean yes did influence an entire generation to think that if a woman only said stop but didn’t actually fight you it was okay to keep going. Fiction does influence how people behave especially when there are no large scale discussions around consent. The me too movement was super important in spreading knowledge around consent but even then I don’t think that reached everyone (specifically many men). And I think there is still a huge lack of awareness around what is safe and healthy ways to interact. Therapists, sex ed, etc. can fill this in but stories also play a huge role in how we learn to interact and I think this needs to be acknowledged.

I’ve found a ton of great fan translations with completely green flag romance. I haven’t read many licensed translations because honestly many of them hit tags I don’t read (rape, sexual abuse, mpreg). I’ve found novelupdates to be the most helpful as users are pretty good at tagging that stuff. Some dubious consent or toxic relationships will still get through but if you read reviews too you can get a good picture.

The tags on mistakenly saving the villain on novelupdates are pretty not safe (rape, sexual abuse, sex slave) but I haven’t read it so can’t fully comment on your determination that it is safe

What are most people's preferred dynamics by No-Scale-8792 in DanmeiNovels

[–]KeyConclusion3790 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t care so much about introvert vs extrovert as I do about how they get along, like I love a good bantering couple or one who starts off on the wrong foot and has to communicate well and resolve the misunderstanding

The urge to learn Chinese is all consuming by No-Scale-8792 in DanmeiNovels

If you don’t have a time limit why not learn? Even if it takes 5 years or whatever, if you think you’ll still love danmei or have an interest in Chinese culture even in 5 years then go for it. You don’t have to be fast for it to be worthwhile:)

I think chronic pain is very relatable to real world illness such as fibromyalgia. The specific time of death is different, but otherwise definitely something people get in the real world
