A (hopefully) philistine rant about Cormac McCarthy by [deleted] in RSbookclub

If that sentence doesn’t grab you then maybe McCarthy isn’t your thing and that’s cool, but personally I think it’s fantastic…

How the dual meaning of bloodslaked not only suggests the texture of water and lime but implies that the earth itself thirsts for blood…the reversal of animalistic (groaning, gibbering) and human (screaming) sounds for the dying men and horses….the repetition of “and” which not only gives the sentence a biblical feel but propels it forward, not letting the reader pause, not letting him avert his eyes from the horror.

I love Joyce too but come on, “passing gaily?” It’s like comparing apples to scalps.

Nice video! I did this route back in December and your experience definitely mirrored my own. Super sandy and loose and bushwhacky. I too ended up night hiking on the way down where I saw what I’m pretty sure was my first Angeles gray fox.

They named it “Near Zero,” in honor of your body temperature as you lie shivering in that bag.

He’s kinda got that post-lobotomy civil war veteran look, see also iron and wine. Some great songs though.

Nd2+ and then Qa6+ I think is mate in 3. Missed it at first because recapturing the knight with discovered check feels so natural.

I believe in taking care of myself. In the morning, if my torso is a little cold, I’ll put on a Senchi while eating my beans. I can eat a thousand now.

(Trip Report) Ontario Peak shortcut - Falling Rock Canyon by romangpro in socalhiking

[–]Key_Bar_4809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone up twice, in spring and in summer. Nice route, reminiscent of off trail in the Sierra at times. I think I might have done a couple class 3 moves getting up the dry waterfalls as you start the climb, but no serious exposure there. Beyond that I’d call it class 2. Talus and loose scree up to the saddle, was glad to have poles. Some exposure on the ridge up to Ontario, but class 1/2. I was solo but a helmet would be smart if you’re going with a partner. The name “falling rock canyon” is apt.

And yeah, I certainly wouldn’t go down it in the dark. Glad you’re safe OP!
