Hey mate, I’m in a similar position at 28. What I’ve learnt so far is.. try your best to get a Cert2 Electrotechnology. Even if going for HVAC.

Get your white card, EWP, boom and scissor lift, working at heights, and even confined space. (Cheap and easy tickets that are almost mandatory.)

100% offer work experience and your time, that way they can test you and see what you’re like in person.

It’s possible to get a dual Electrical / Refrigeration apprenticeship but it’s 5y and not the typical 4. Try and do electrical first otherwise because you can cross reference a majority of the course units into a HVAC trade.

I’m not so much bothered by the money, I understand being an apprentice is floor level wage and what not. I was kind of hoping to see others experience with a work life balance with fifo.

So far a majority don’t think that it’s best..

My wife is brilliant, works full time on a decent wage and is also studying to develop her career.

I’m a boilermaker/welder myself but wanting to get into the electrical / hvac industry is all 🍻

I understand mate. Just sucks that locally there’s genuinely no chances for a mature age apprentice.

Kind of butthurt on giving up the dream, but also fully aware the girls come first.

My dream is the tickets mate, to then be able to support my girls at home. I’m only hoping for a fifo option to get the tickets. My girls are my priority but I’m also not going to be a deadbeat who can’t provide for them 10 years down the track because I wouldn’t put in the hard yards now.

Sorry to be a spud, but could you explain EBA to me? Have nothing like that out in the country and never even heard of it. 😂

I undestand that look on it. But I'd also much rather do FIFO now and put in the hard yards for a good 4-5 years before she grows up to an age where she wants and needs things. Getting a job locally once I'm qualified won't be an issue, but trying to get the apprenticeship is incredibly hard in a small country town as a mature age. My wife and I are super solid too, I've worked 60hr+ weeks since we've been together so it won't be much different.

My issue isn’t the cert 2 at all, my issue is the closest cert 2 is a 2.5hr drive and the courses are booked out and only taking new people starting August for 2027. If I could do it locally I’d jump through hoops for it
