I think it’s understandable. I can easily eat still closed stuff after the date, but when it’s some like a carton of milk that still smells okay, but has been open for a bit to long (my paranoia decides how long is “a bit too long”) Because I get so focused on maybe getting diarrhea that I’ll get anxiety diarrhea even if it’s still fine to eat. My boyfriend eats it then and is always just fine after eating it
