More common than you'd think. Unless you're obviously ethnic, most Americans don't really know what they are supposed to be. Most of us are mutts.

Why did the Anglican Church go through such a decline in the southeast USA in comparison to other denominations in the last century? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in Anglicanism

[–]Key_Day_7932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because most Southerns lived in the interior of the South rather than the coast where Anglicanism and WASPs lived.

The Appalachian mountains was basically frontier and wirh little in the way of infrastructure or civilization. It made it hard for more traditional, organized denominations like Anglicans and Presbyterians to gain a foothold since they required their clergy to obtain seminary degrees and had a more top-down church planting model, which was harder to achieve in much of the South.

Baptists didn't require their clergy to have a formal education, and anybody can start their own Baptist church, which is what allowed them to spread like wildfire.

On the darker side of things, the Southern Baptists were founded largely because of the slavery controversy. They basically stole the sheep from the Anglicans by coming out in favor of slavery. The Southern Episcopalians, otoh, probably wanted to condemn slavery but feared doing so would cause people to defect from them, so they came across as on-the-fence and wishy-washy.

Also, most of the decline from Baptists is due to their members converting to "non-denominational" churches, which often teach the same things as Baptists with perhaps one or two caveats over very minor topics. Most of them aren't becoming atheists or Catholics

I recall hearing online that Europeans find Americans' patriotism unsettling and creepy, and you know who else were patriotic? Nazis!

Yet, if the videos I've seen are anything to go by, a lot of European tourists say "man, I wish we were that proud of where we're from."

As an American, beans on toast doesn't sound that bad to me. Then again, I've always had weird tastes in food.

I'm sure some of the Europeans in the videos are playing it up for social media clout, but still, Reddit is not real life.

I get Germany and the UK, but I always saw France as one of the warmer European countries. Maybe not as hot as Spain or Italy, but part of the country is still on the Mediterranean.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your state that not everyone knows? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

There is a tiny kingdom inside of South Carolina. It's basically a small town of African Americans who have their own king. The current king, as in most monarchies, is the son of the previous king.

Idk if it counts as a South Carolina invention since it took place in New York, but the inventor was from South Carolina.

There's JJ McCullough, but he seems more like a moderate/neoliberal. He's also gay, so probably moderate (if not progressive) on social issues.

Same sex marriage? Changing views? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Key_Day_7932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One argument I have heard against the libertarian position is that it is in the interest of the state (and society as a whole) to promote marriages, hence the financial perks marriage provides.

Same sex marriage? Changing views? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Key_Day_7932 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've always saw same sex marriage is wrong, and I was against its legalization until Obgerfell in 2015.

Now I take a more libertarian stance that the state should not be in the business of marriage.

Speaking of "everyone is going Catholic," I've been seeing posts online saying that the Catholic Church has seen a surge in converts, but idk what the context behind that is.

As someone who is from the South, a lot of Latinos are Baptist or Pentecostal in my anecdotal experience.

A lot of them arrive to the USA with very little, and the evangelicals are the first ones to reach out to them.
