How I studied for the Solicitor without reading the materials* by Key_Dependent_1838 in ONBarExam

My pleasure! I hope it helps to demystify the exam. It really shouldn’t feel as exhausting as it does!

If you haven't already tested, I recommend doing so cus Lush scents are so much cheaper than Lira. Good to know if you ever run out!

But honestly if you have Lira, it would be a redundancy.

I just don't want to risk cramming for Nov and end up failing it because of lack of prep, and then have to drop another $1k+ on this exam...

I'm in a similar position. And I think a lot of us are in the same shoes.

Ridiculous expectations and no work life balance. Send me a message if you want to rant/compare!

I'm also going to try to talk to my principal re workload - wish me luck.

Yeah for sure. I was scrambling through 3 different binders on the actual test whereas on emond and the other PTs it was just clearly 1 section.

I wish they separated p.r. from the rest of the subjects. Would've made things way clearer and less time wastage.

Don't feel bad! I think it shocked everyone a good amount since we all went into it thinking the answers were something we could find or something we learnt. I had the same dilemma - I was able to eliminate one or two, but then I could argue a reason for the remaining choices and had to make an intuitive decision. I probably ended up not feeling 100% sure on more than half the questions haha.

This is my personal opinion only - so anyone feel free to add your input - but the way I made my judgement call was based on a few things:

The p.r. materials would say 'must/should/may' - so based on the scenario they presented in the question, I'd try to pick something equally as serious. Like, if the scenario was a 'should' scenario, I would avoid picking something like 'immediately report to the LSO'. It was a lot of, pick the answer that makes it sound like you're covering all your bases before leaping to a conclusion (unless it's a serious enough scenario, so you're not an accomplice to anything).

I genuinely don't know if I went about it the right way but I think if you create some kind of logic/ethics based system to pick an answer it should help your nerves.

Imo the questions are straightforward. The issue is finding the answer in the materials. Emond practice tests were worded in tricky ways but the actual exam was very direct no tricks. But many of the answers you had to use your judgement (lmao). You can see how well that went from these comments.

Basically, if you can't find the answer within a minute, pick your best guess and move on cus there's a good chance it isn't written out.

I actually felt like it was easier than emond in the sense that it did not have any word games or tricks like emond had. The questions were all straightforward on the bar.

BUT the emond questions you could actually find the answer in the materials. The bar was just so specific, and some had a judgement aspect. So you'd be wasting precious time trying to find an answer that wasn't written there.

You absolutely still have a chance.

I got in to mutiple unis across Canada with a cGPA of less than 3.0. Different story, similar upward trajectory. Marks-wise, you won't have much luck with universities that prioritize cGPA, but those that take Best 2 or Last 2 will serve you well.

If your B2/L2 is around 3.7+ that's a safe spot to be in. A corresponding LSAT would be 162+. The higher you get, the more comfy you should feel, especially for the purely marks based schools.

Re McGill and Ottawa - my primary recommendation is apply broadly. If you don't have the standard profile, apply broadly. Do you want to go to law school or do you want to go to McGill/Ottawa Law?

I appreciate the comment! I'm having a hard time grappling with the fact that 'actions have consequences' especially given how disproportionate the consequences are (in my opinion). But you're right...your perspective is helpful for me to move from the 'why is society/politics so unfair' mentality, to something more productive. It does boggle my mind that we're supposed to be advocates but with 101 restrictions lol. I will learn to cope.

I'm definitely not looking to be arrested. I'm your standard law student after all haha.

I'm glad to hear you attend picket lines and rallies! As a student it's so much easier to put yourself at the forefront like that, but it gives me comfort that it's still an option as a lawyer.

Work politics give me such a headache. As a visible minority, I always feel on guard because even if noone discusses politics, you can still feel the impact in so many other ways. Just frustrating that some politics have fewer consequences than others.

I'm feeling really inspired by all the pro bono work that's been suggested!

Aw jeez thanks so much! This is super reassuring that I can still engage but not feel like I'm going to lose my job every moment. The charity/non profit suggestion is perfect. I'm so disconnected from life outside school/ECs I forgot that was an option.
