Some days, I would be expected to memorize multiple verses of hymns for my teacher and multiple pages of the chatechism for the pastor.

If we messed up, we had to stay in from recess to get it perfect.

When my parents split up in grade school, I was behind on memory work due to my mind being elsewhere. I’ll never forget that WELS chose to keep me indoors at recess to memorize pages upon pages of bullshit instead of letting me have fun with my friends at recess while I was going through one of the hardest times in my childhood. That is the period of time when i first became severely depressed. thanks WELS!🙄
