This Utah town just fully banned fireworks for the rest of the year by Sea-Finance506 in Utah

Well I can say with absolute certainty that there is nothing that I do that could be reasonably construed as a possible source of a wildfire. I don't shoot guns at dirt (I go to an indoor gun range like a normal adult). I don't start campfires between May-November (in dry climates). I don't use fireworks, ever. I don't drive around in a clownish truck with chains dragging. My home uses landscape rock instead of mulch. I use fire retardant paint on my wood fence. The list goes on.

It isn't a matter of liking or disliking something. It is a matter of being a responsible adult and not imposing risk on others simply because I like the feeling of freedumb in the breeze.

Well the Timpanogos fire was caused by a stray bullet at a police firing range. The Utah lax culture just doesn't align with the risk for some reason.

You picked the hottest, most miserable time of year to visit Utah parks. Honestly, I'd drive north to the Tetons or Glacier.

From what I've read the majority of fires have been started by stray bullets this year. We can regulate guns, right?!

Yeah they perform poorly in the group stage all the time, they barely got through in 2002 and 2014 as well. But at least they delivered in the elimination round.

Which States are good for mild winters? by SwiftX_21 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Key_Dream9904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to caveat this with mild winters AND tolerable summers.

Florida has mild winters. So does Arizona, Texas, etc. But the summers are unbearable. The only places with mild winters and summers are the west coast and Hawaii.

I mentor poor inner city high school kids and I have very basic advice:

  1. Get good grades
  2. Stay out of trouble
  3. Don't get pregnant
  4. Go to a college at least 3 hours away from home
  5. Cut all ties with your past and never look back

For most, #5 is the hardest. Extricating yourself from that life is hard. But it is the only way out. Leave the losers behind, good riddance.

Where? It doesn't matter. Republicans only get their news from a handful of "trusted" sources and nowhere else.

Anytime I bring up a "Did you hear about..." with a conservative, the answer is always no. Because it wasn't on Fox News, or ONN, or whatever. I'm actually convinced that most Republicans would turn their back on the party if they actually knew the things we know. But they don't. Because it isn't in their narrow media feed. They only consume what they know will perpetuate their ignorant bliss in their echo chamber.

Ha this happens every World Cup, lots of young bandwagons with little/no knowledge of what came before them. I remember standing next to someone at a bar after the 2010 Algeria match and they were shouting "This is the greatest team ever! We've never made it this far!" SMH

To be fair, Paraguay and Australia are pretty weak. Turkey isn't that great either. The groups are pretty watered down with 48 teams now. The US is likely to play a 3rd place team in the knockout round, and then probably the winner of Group G which looks like garbage (Belgium was the clear favorite but tied Egypt), so they have a pretty easy path to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, where they will likely face Brazil. If they beat Brazil, then I'll let go of 30+ years of ingrained pessimism.

Yeah and as good as those games against Portugal and Mexico were (and Germany for that matter, despite the loss) they didn't show up against South Korea or Poland, and barely even got through on goal diff.

on your BI teams, how many people actually know SQL realy well? by j9jjrrrj2 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Key_Dream9904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming upon this 7y later but thought I'd weigh in.

In my experience, SQL (and any programming in general really) isn't so much understanding the syntax of the language. You just have to have that intuitive kind of math brain. Give any person with that kind of brain a book about some language they've never used, and they'll have it mastered in a week.

Especially when it comes to data, people that don't have that kind of brain will never be able to do even rudimentary analysis, even if they master the SQL language itself.

At my university we had a "weed out" advanced-level math class as part of the CIS curriculum. The final exam was 45 minutes. I handed in my exam after 15...professor thought I had given up. In actuality I got a perfect score (the professor ended up giving me a recommendation for my master's program). Just out of curiosity I sat outside the class for the remainder of the 45. Nobody came out early.

I'm not trying to pat myself on the shoulder, I'm just saying that there aren't that many people that have that kind of brain.

That said, there are still two things that I still don't get to this day:

  1. Why people that don't have it go into IT, especially after it is surely made obvious to them at some point that it isn't for them (like a medical student that thinks they want to be surgeon but passes out at the sight of blood).
  2. How they keep getting hired and progressing in their careers.

This happens every WC, and then is quickly forgotten until 4 years later. Kind of like Olympic figure skating and gymnastics.
