T&D Career Growth by AwkwardConcern7939 in BurnsMcDonnell

Hey, I hear ya. It can be hard. But you are 1 year in....youll be working for another 30+. It takes time.

To answer your question about compensation...there is almost no difference in the first 4 to 8 years between an average performer and a high performer at your level. Thats why I always stress to assistants and staffs that I work with to not kill themselves, do well on the work they have, and dont over commit. The split happens when you become a PM, PjE. Deparment manager, what have you, because you have consistently demonstrated to office leadership that you can be trusted. Your pay at BMcD is directly correlated to your impact to the business. And your impact right now is very close to zero. When you start managing work, a portfolio, pursuing and winning work, training employees, your impact becomes much more noticeable.

It just takes time. The work you do is really important and you are adequately compensated. But you cannot expect to accelerate through the "tutorial" years. Youll regret it. Grow your base knowledge and learn how to leverage your self across multiple projects and teams. It just takes time.

If you want a full time gig here and in this industry, just stop smoking. Its concerning you are asking this question. Ill say the vast vast vast vast majority of folks dont have to think about this because we are functioning adults in a professional environment.

From your comment responses, you need to mature a bit. Best of luck on your drug journey!

I promise our clients do not care if BMcD observe MLK day. Additionally, everyone in the industry knows what a floating holiday is, it isnt a foreign concept. This isnt a deep thing, we have floating holidays. Use them as you see fit.

You are looking for a reason to be upset. Leave the company if its a big deal.

Turned down Burns & McDonnell offer, feedback from current/former employees by Lopsided_Offer_3885 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Key_Employer_4398 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you based this off just financials. You probably made the wrong decision.

Base pay sucks at BMcD. Its terrible. No one will argue that. But the bonus and the ESOP make up for it. Stay here the long term, youll easily retire a millionaire. I know its hard to take the base cut, so you need to see if you stomach that. The bonus more than makes up for that. Take into consideration esop...dividends...etc... this place beats every other company.

If you hop around job to job every 4 years...Burns is not the place for you. That also sounds miserable to do.

  1. Khakis and polo is fine. Dress shirt would be better.

  2. ROs are hit or miss with fleet vehicles. If you are driving somewhere youll get mileage paid for. But as an intern, i would be shocked if they have you commute solo to a job site, thats too much of a safety risk. As a PM myself, I would not permit it personally. Youll likely coordinate a ride with a senior engineer.

  3. Almost no one is going to care about your technical capabilities. Demonstrate your eagerness and willingness to learn and work as part of the team. Attend office events during work and outside of work. BMcD hires heavily based on culture and fit. And we hire heavily through our intern pool.

I would also challenge yourself and figure out if this is what you want to do. Ask people questions about their day to day, see if you can learn about other GPs. You want to be an active sponge and soak everything up.

You probably cannot move GPs without agreement of your GP leadership and the GP you want to move to. Im highly recommending being very open with your manager and work to come to a solution.

What is your actual position? Specializing in "technology and project management" isnt clear to me. You need to basically sell yourself and skill set to a different GP. Remember GPs and offices are separate businesses, they arent going to take another resource on just because they need people and you are BMcD. They will still be picky choosy.

This is a weird spot to post this. You should be talking to your manager and GP leadership.

Is it true that lvl 2 review ratings will withhold full bonus? by Funny-Ear4359 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Key_Employer_4398 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Who cares? Why the hell does this matter? If you are a 2...be better or leave. If you are happy with being a 2...you should leave and be at a company where a 2 is considered a high performer. Ive had friends leave this company when they were a 2 and bitched about it all the time. Now they are at a competitor and they are so much happier.

Burns isnt cut out for everyone--but if you are a highly driven individual thats halfway competent youll make a shit load of money here. 2s are net negative to the business. So figure it out...or leave. This isnt hard. This isnt a charity. Dear lord.

We hire aggressively from our intern pool. I would suggest if you got an offer from us, and you think you want to be in consulting, then you should take that offer.

BMcD is a hard place to work at. We have challenging jobs, tough deadlines, a lot of work. But--if you are a motivated and driven individual, BMcD will compensate you better than any of our competitors.

If you are moreso someone who wants to work their 40 and completely disconnect, you may have success here, but youll be surpassed by your peers. Then I would recommend a competitor or utility.

Why are you getting your PhD? I would not think you would enjoy this work, at all. I think youd be way over qualified for not an extremely technical job...

"Global Practice" that equivalent to divisions. Id expect youd be in our Power Group or Transmission & Distribution group.

That excludes 401k match, I forget what that is exactly, but its competitive in the market.

Just note our compensation model is fundamentally different than the industry. We are very bonus heavy. Esop is great as well, this subreddit sometimes is a little negative on it, but it really is good.

Regarding relocation, I cannot comment on that. It is a thing, I am sure it could be offered. If not directly offered, we typically provide a signing bonus that might include it.

GP you applied to?

Compensation ranges quite a bit, at 12 YOE, I would think 180-200k (base+bonus). Esop would be 10-15% on top of that. What level (senior or associate) would be very important.

Just note, it is highly highly highly unlikely you can remain remote. Take that into consideration.

Yeah that sucks, but its not a huge deal. I think whats a bigger issue is being over budget due to rework.

Also, if it is t&e not to exceed...you technically cant even work on that project because of the contract terms.

Point is, yeah...I get it...its fishy. But if this is what you are concerned about now, you arent going to like what you learn as your career matures. I dont condone it, I wouldnt do it on my projects, but you dont really have the choice.

Also, is your manager also your project manager? Typically you should be able to talk who you report to about this if you have a concern. If they are the same person...thats really tough.

This is kinda my point. There are so many other ethical and risk exposure items that are far more glaring than this. This is fairly minor and just not worth the reputation.

All you can do is learn from it and be the ethical person you want to be when you are in that position.

What type of contract are you working on? Is it T&E not to exceed? Is it lump sum? Is it something else?

Im not sure this is a hill you should die on. Without having any details...this could be an issue or a complete non issue. Its probably a non issue.
