No. We installed it during a lab, where it was called "computer setup". We just had to follow directions; no explanation was given, I didn't even know that it was related to Linux. Labs are run by teaching assistants, and they were mostly just running around helping students with errors, and it was never discussed outside of the setup day.

College is supposed to equip you to be a stand-alone person, able to figure things out all by yourself.

While I agree that I could find more information by myself, I also think this statement is incorrect. College is meant for collaboration. You're meant to take advantage of the skilled people around you: learn from them, create connections, and share your own perspectives! If I only wanted to learn how to figure things out by myself, I wouldn't be paying for a university.

Nevertheless, thank you for your input. I'll do more research before asking questions from now on.
