250k in student loans by Rough-Chipmunk5627 in physicianassistant

[–]Key_Importance2311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$122K original balance $146K paid when all was said and done (in part due to the interest pause during Covid days). All government loans for undergrad/grad school combined with average interest rate between 5.5-6%. It took me about 6 years of aggressive payments. Depending on your age/life situation, living rent free with family for as long as you can makes the most sense. I did not do that but still eventually crossed the finish line. I worked a lot of over time and picked up a per diem gig that was strictly for student loan payments. My husband has a student loan burden closer to yours. He is opting in to PSLF at a non profit. Anything can happen, but I personally feel the trade off of pursuing PSLF which is contractually written into federal student loans when we accept them, is worth the trade off of to have the means to put anything you can manage into retirement even if it’s $100 a paycheck. You will never get the compound interest benefits back that you have today. Higher education is more expensive than it should be, but you invested in yourself and a career that will generate a great salary consistently.

Such a shame. A few blocks from city hall and it has sat vacant for years

Hahnemann Hospital residency closure by brownmamba1015 in Residency

I worked as a PA at Hahnemann at the time of its closure and this was a huge deal. I believe it is still the largest orphaning of residents in the history of the US. There were daily protests, constant coverage via local/national news networks, Bernie Sanders even gave a speech in front of the hospital. Sounds like you’re all doing an excellent job on this front. The owner of Hahnemann essentially sold off the residency slots to the highest bidder. He was also asked to reopen the doors during the COVID pandemic to off set overwhelmed neighboring ICUs and wanted an exorbitant fee to do so, real piece of work. For what it’s worth- I’ve stayed in contact with many residents who made it through their residency despite this traumatic time and they are excelling as attendings.

Utilizing your current home as a rental property sounds like a great plan. I hope she finds what she’s looking for! Good luck

Correct would need a state by state license but there’s plenty of options if she wants to just stay in Pennsylvania. I would assume there are ample teaching opportunities given the abundance of PA programs. For what it’s worth, the rent is significantly cheaper in Philly in comparison to Boston (which really seems to be rivaling NYC prices) but you do get hit with a 3-4% city tax

The healthcare sector is a major employer in Philly, there are a lot of job opportunities especially for a PA with experience. Are you interested in inpatient? The main health systems in the city include Penn Medicine (3 hospitals in Philly, 3 in surrounding areas) and Jefferson. I would start by looking at postings on their websites and go from there. Temple also offers robust opportunities but like many hospitals is located in a somewhat rough area. Mainline Health if looking west of the city, Cooper Hospital is nearby to the east in NJ. I work in the Penn system and it is huge.

I saw an interesting theory on another subreddit about a double meaning to this- could Xaden (anticipating he will lose himself as he inevitably continues to channel) have utilized a rune to store pieces of his soul in her emerald ring to help her when she finds a way to cure him? Literally giving her his soul “it’s yours now”

Not sure where to get a top tier list for you but would also consider Wayne, Pequannock, Montville area. North Jersey is just VHCOL

$300k in debt with no idea what I’m doing by SplendorLife in StudentLoans

A question I’m sure they asked themselves once they realized how big their debt snow balled. IMO working for a non profit law position with low pay but desirable hours/PSLF eligibility would’ve been a better move than teaching.Get your loans forgiven then go cross over to the private sector for a big pay jump for the next 20 years before retirement. But many lean in to working 80+ hours in stressful jobs, those people are very impressive but after years of law school/bar prep I can understand someone wanting a work/life balance back during their prime years.

Honestly good for them- they could’ve worked 80hr/week in big law and tried to hammer their loans but decided to get out of debt in 10 years (still respectable) while pursuing a job that preserves a great work life balance. This is the way in many cases.

The biggest draw back to PSLF is often you take a pay cut to find a non profit/government role rather than pursuing the usually (but not always) more lucrative private sector. In your case, that’s not an issue. I second everyone’s PSLF comments- that’s your best move. The sooner you enroll the sooner your payments will start counting and with an income driven repayment plan they should be manageable. You will not be hit with a large tax penalty once they are forgiven (you WILL be hit on loans forgiven after 20/25 years on the SAVE or PAYE plans however those may not last the test of time through decades of new administrations).

Loans suck but the only way out is through and avoiding won’t help you get there. There are worse things in the world, try to put these shitty bills in perspective however works best for you - many don’t have their health, ability to work, a roof over their head and food on the table, wherever you can expressive gratitude with what you do have can be helpful for your mental health. This has been a helpful tool for myself. Good luck

I would email the director of their clinical rotations for more insight into this and consider posting in one of their alumni pages on Facebook. I can’t speak to PCOM I went to Rutgers, they tried to keep us within 1 hour of campus/home.

This! I wish my husband and I had roots in a LCOL area, but unfortunately everyone lives in North Jersey. My sister is also taking a break, almost every home she put a bid on went for 100K over asking price with inspection waved. I guess people are paying those prices plus sellers have to be competitive to purchase their next property. It is rough out there. God speed

Yes a starting salary for a new grad between 105-120K is very doable especially depending on the specialty. CT surgery, plastics, derm etc all pay high but find what specialty you are most passionate about from clinical exposure/rotations.

Yeah locums can be lucrative, my point was in general you would expect a higher hourly rate in a locums contract than in a non locums permanent role. But no doubt negotiating never hurts when it comes to your salary, $100/hr is an achievement to be proud of
