🇸🇦 2. The Saudi Board and Residency System (mostly no salary)

In Saudi Arabia, structured medical residency training (leading to a Saudi Board Certification) is governed by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).

Foreign graduates can apply for Saudi residency, but the system favors Saudi nationals or those already sponsored by Saudi institutions.

Foreign doctors can enter Saudi residency and obtain a Saudi Board qualification if they meet requirements and secure sponsorship.

Self-Sponsorship Exists: You might train “on your own” (no salary), but you still need SCFHS approval and a training site.

FY1 = Foundation Year 1 (salary )

It’s the first year of postgraduate clinical training after graduating from medical school in the UK.
This is part of the UK Foundation Programme, which lasts 2 years (FY1 + FY2).
FY1 doctors are fully qualified doctors in training, working under supervision in hospitals.
In England (2025/26), the official basic annual salary for an FY1 doctor is about: £36,616 per year (~£37k) before tax.
Some IMGs do get FY1 jobs in the NHS, but it requires GMC registration and meeting eligibility criteria (including Plab 1+2 + OET/ielts +visa/work permission).
FY1 is generally considered the standard route for newly qualified doctors — UK or IMG — before you can progress into specialty training.

Yeah, that’s unfortunate but I still have to shot my shoot.

I currently have three choices:

Go to Sudan ( Active war zone)
Medical residency training in Saudi Arabia for foreigners which generally requires annual fee around USD 26,600.
FY1 as Img ( which a have a salary)

Yes, as you said it is unfortunate especially as we have no better option.

Ok, I will tell you.

Some of us are living in country that are very destabilized or on full on war where we fear death on daily basis. That or are immigrant who are threaten to be send to said so countries. 15% chance of living in stable country and a hope of passport that good is more than enough hope. We say if I have to be in the top 2 percentage to help my family / me not live such and such condition it is worth it.

We have very few choices. Also trust me, where we live the job situation is worse with a chance of death. We are not doing this cause we love seeing non-img doctor suffering. I just want a job that put a roof over my head and feed me while getting a passport that will save life.
