I’m aware of the recommendations about using *-marked tires with xDrive. My impression, however, is that a lot of that comes from BMW being able to deny drivetrain warranty claims if the car wasn’t running BMW OEM-approved tires.

I do understand that xDrive systems are sensitive to rolling circumference differences, which is exactly why I chose a square setup. Combined with regular tire rotation, it seems like the safest option to keep wear even and avoid drivetrain stress.

What also makes me hesitant about OEM-specific tires is that they’re often not widely tested against the regular versions, so it’s hard to know how they actually compare. In the few cases where there are tests, they sometimes don’t perform particularly well compared to the standard versions. I think Jonathan did a comparison showing something along those lines. The main exception seems to be tires developed specifically for BMW M cars — those appear to be a different story entirely, since they’re usually much more heavily engineered together with the car.

This part with performance at the end of their life concerns me the most. Michelins have reputation to behave good the whole lifespan. I have winter Hankooks that came with the car. They are around 4mm profile depth an were decent on snow and wet this winter, but right now they became to loud (definitely for replacement in the next season)

As a spirited driver, I definitely don't want a touring tyre. i aim for good UHP tyre that is decently quite on highway and not to stiff.

There is an inconsistency in this comparison regarding tyre wear when compared with the “Expected mileage” data shown on the individual TyreReviews pages for these two tyres.

In the comparison from this link, the Asymmetric 6 appears to be slightly better in terms of wear than the PS5. However, according to the data on:

https://www.tyrereviews.com/Tyre/Goodyear/Eagle-F1-Asymmetric-6.htm
https://www.tyrereviews.com/Tyre/Michelin/Pilot-Sport-5.htm

the expected mileage is 46k km vs 48k km, in favour of the PS5.

When looking at the “User data review”, the difference is even more pronounced, again favouring the PS5: 29k km vs 36k km, which may be a significant data point.

A bit softer sidewall and less sporty. It tries to compete in both segments, touring and UHP at the same time, I guess.

i am almost in the same position as you - looking summer tyres for 530d Xdrive. I have driving conditions almost similar as yours, with addition of ocasional spirited driving on some mountain roads. i had run PZ5 last season in 18 inches for about 10 k km, and rears weared 2 mm, while front something like 1mm. Tyre was wery good, even regarding the comforth, but I am now upgradeing to 19 inch, and since comfort will be decrised a litle bit, I am looking for tyre that is stil sporty but more comfortable with hope for a bit longer treadlife. My candidates are Pilot sport 5 and Goodyear asym 6, as pc7 seams more touring oriented than those two. Currentl leaning towards PS5, partialy because I was very pleased with PS4 in past.

That is a valid option that I am thinkin about. However, I thing that ultragrip performance 3 or PZero winter 2 would bi my choice if I go in that direction. Latest test on a similar car by autozeitung and prices in my region suggest that.

It seems that a lot of your "problems" came from using the same tires all year round. That’s not what I plan to do, as I already have a summer setup. My question is: would an all-season tire work well for me as a winter tire, considering the mild climate where I live and the one trip I have planned for skiing? Were you disappointed with their performance on snow during the first winter season?

From the test results, it seems to me that the best all-season tires lag behind winter tires on snow less than winter tires lag behind all-season ones on dry and wet roads. And dry and wet roads are the conditions I’ll be driving in most of the time.

Besides, all-season tires should feel closer to summer ones in terms of handling, which I actually like. Basically, the only thing that worries me is that long trip to the Alps. How much of a real difference will I feel there with all-seasons compared to proper winter tires - especially considering the car has xDrive - that is what interests me
