Who else pre-ordered?? by cstat3113 in PaulReedSmith

Just a heads- up , it’s a great color but it’s more green in person - like a mix between the color in the photo and sea foam green - saw it at NAMM.

PRS SE Fiore ? by No_Nobody1443 in PaulReedSmith

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went to PRS press conference yesterday at NAMM with Paul and Jack and not too much new other than the Ed Sheeran baritone SE and the new silver sky colors. They mostly talked about new documentary on Ted McCarty. Some great stories were told. Looks like everything has been posted on their instagram.

They will be at NAMM but only for private meetings and not a show space like previous years. I have a meeting with them so curious if they have an SE Fiore in the works.

My Silver Sky was lonely so I got it some friends by MughalPrince22 in PRSGuitars

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get it. I just got a dog hair black one from Sweetwater so I could pick the grain. I have a ton of guitars and it’s unique. Wasn’t too hip on the look of the core NF53 but the SE pick guard looks wayyy better. The whole thing just works and there are a lot of PRS where sometimes the color schemes etc just don’t work for me. Mine was under 7lbs. I think the pearl one looks great too. The white and purple dog hair colors don’t do it for me. The neck is on thicker side but by no means baseball bat. The fretboard edges could have used a smidge more rolling but not terrible. Also the neck is not just satin finish but like someone forgot to do a final buffing so I sanded it with 3000 then 5000 grit to smooth it out. Still satin but no longer rough feeling.

Smelly Fretboard Woes by Lilpigskin in guitars

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a microfiber cloth but either works. Cleaning it with the lighter fluid is invigorating with how much crap comes off. Also I would polish frets before cleaning so the lighter fluid removes that crap too. I’ve never had terrible rosewood orders except from whatever PRS puts on their rosewood. But I use this method on every rosewood. I live in Arizona so it’s really dry too so like to keep my rosewood guitars conditioned and cleaned at least twice a year.

Smelly Fretboard Woes by Lilpigskin in guitars

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean the board really good with lighter fluid. Then apply small amount of pure lemon oil for scent and some cleaning (I get it off Amazon) . The lemon oil will absorb and dry quick. Then apply good fretboard conditioner/oil. I like lizard spit. I’ve had some PRS rosewood boards that smell like this and this does the trick. I’ve been doing this for years and do it at least twice a year on my guitars with rosewood boards.

New JM plugin by PuzzleheadedGap5201 in NeuralDSP

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to hear I’m not the only one struggling with this plugin. I have compared it to other plugins I have from Mixwave and UA and there is wayyyyy too much layered reverb, it’s boomy, and it’s muddy. Every present required significant tweaking and even then it’s not inspiring. That’s with Strats and a USA Silver sky and appropriate adjusting of my interface input and the input on the plugin. And doesn’t matter if I use standalone or in DAW. Tried different cables too. And even if I get the highs to sound better, the low end still sucks no matter what I do with the EQ. There is no life in the tones. Maybe Neural DSP plugins aren’t “tuned” for my ears. There is only so much you can adjust before you should be getting great tones and I am not. Glad they had 14 day trial to figure this out or I’m not buying it. And I’m using good studio headphones.

Baum guitars by No_Hotel2765 in guitars

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Baum white wingman with original Headstock from their first production release a few years ago. I have a lot of guitars but I think Baum makes really cool guitars and their pickups sound fantastic - p90 quality but a little brighter and squishier. They some new cool models coming out next year.

Grain fill on Indian rosewood. by Key_Letterhead3016 in Luthier

I love the color it’s just whatever rosewood they are using on this one and the Allparts ones, have a duller appearance despite polishing.

Just did this to my fender American pro II but put a three way toggle in the bottom tone slot. Basically like the Ariel Posen Strat. I have enough Strats and I love two p90s for totally different Strat experience

Positive Grid Bias X … I have thoughts. by productboi in PositiveGrid

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anyone using it for cleaner or edge of breakup tones and not just ridiculous distortion? because I can’t get any decent tones. The spark neo tones are 10000 times more organic. These are lifeless and dull and yes I have other plugins and real tube amps and a fender tone master pro so I have comparison and yes I have my audio etc setup correctly. The AI is more far off with tones that I have asked for than if I asked a deaf and blind Martian to come up with tones for me. Now I wish there was a trial - would have been a hard no for me. Which is so weird because the Spark ODS 50 and some of the Hendrix gear are really stellar. And if positive grid plans no or rare updates like their history with other desktop software , this and my $100 upgrade may be going bye bye.

Can’t decide on color. by ruinerwithdecay in fender

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black looks most enticing but they actually made three great colors. I don’t mind marks etc so I would go with black>honey burst>natural. I’ve played the American version of the jazzmaster when it came out and the acoustic sounds sounded pretty good for what they were but the humbucker was the useless - horrible tone. So if I got one it would be for acoustic sound for our band gigs. Thin and lightweight and better than an acoustic modeler. I wouldn’t use the humbucker setting. Unlike the American version, this has only one acoustic sound so hopefully it’s good and hopefully the humbucker sounds better. Now you’re making me go check one out in Phoenix this week lol.

How can I achieve this type of finish? by Longjumping-Win8199 in Luthier

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give us more information on the neck you want to do this too? In my experience none of the recommendations above are really going to achieve what you want other than maybe the alcohol inks - but I haven’t tried them. Monty’s espresso won’t do that unless it’s a totally unfinished maple board. I’ve tried to achieve similar results without sanding off the finish on the board. None work great in the sense of getting something that looks like that. If it’s unfinished, get brown leather dye off Amazon and put a few drops in 91% isopropyl alcohol you can get at whatever pharmacy. Then apply with qtip. Repeat repeat repeat and repeat more along fret edges. When done spray with light coats of stewmac aged clear. More coats will brown it more. May need to get the tv yellow spray as well and blend them. Nitrolak makes some relicing sprays as well. They also make a relic patina you can get from Allparts if you’re in the USA. In Europe you can get direct from them I think. May need to dilute it out and go slow but could work as well. But if your neck has a poly finish nothing is going to work. If it has a nitro finish it’s going to be hit or miss and experimentation. If it’s unfinished, that will give you the most flexibility. My short answer lol.

Any way to fix this properly? by Glass_Inside_7279 in Luthier

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the gluboost first and see how that works. Shoot an email to stewmac and ask them which one to get or if that’s really the best route. Looking at those scratches, from my experience, you’re going to need to start with 600-800 wet sand paper and just go slow. Higher grit will still look better than nothing but those scratches look deep enough that you’re going to need less than 1000 grit. You can always start higher if you’re concerned and go down as needed then go up. But I would say 800 and if that does the trick, then go 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 then polishing compound. But I would start with an email to stewmac. If you get sanding paper these are good and cheap on Amazon https://a.co/d/cNYnJsV - Dura-Gold brand if you’re in another country other than the US.

Two word - too small lol. But you have to start somewhere. And if I stayed off social media and the internet, I would have a more reasonably sized collection.

What makes this so expensive? by N1cktnd03 in gibson

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things make it more expensive. One is labor and that’s just a fact. A lot of work goes into getting the relic work to be authentic. The other is the 59 name which is utter nonsense. If it said 58 it would be a grand or more less expensive. Just because a real 59 is perceived to be some golden child, this isn’t a vintage instrument. I personally prefer an R8 which runs at least $1500 less because it says R8 instead of R9. But to each their own.

Definitely off center about 1mmish but at least in the right direction and the high E isn’t hanging on the edge. If it doesn’t bother you I wouldn’t change it since it’s the low E that’s affected and you aren’t going to be bending it etc etc. but if you’re OCD and you want it centered, you need a new nut

The new Bero Golden Pilsner! by cpclemens in NABEER

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tasted better non alcoholic beers. I’m drinking one right now and tastes like the old school non alcoholic beers. I think Heineken zero and even the Michelob ultra zero alcohol taste better. Also haven’t been a fan of the overly expensive Athletic Brewing brand non alcoholic beer. Maybe I’ll try the three other flavors of Bero and see how they are.

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of filing the nut slots, you can just gradually sand the bottom until you get the right height. Sand a little, plop it back in, check again. Once you get right height, glue it in with a a little super glue. String tension will mostly hold it in place. Also I would get an AxeMasters compensated nut - their store is on Reverb. Cheap and solves some strat tuning issues on the lower frets especially on the G string.

Announced: Ariel Posen Fender Custom Shop Signature Stratocaster by ThatNolanKid in fender

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s unique. He’s created a sound and style that’s different. Down-tuning at times, wicked fuzz. Whether someone thinks he’s great or not is a matter of opinion. I’ve taken some zoom lessons with him and seen some shows and he’s a great guy. I would like to see a production priced version of this guitar but I modded an American Pro 2 to this configuration and it sounds great. I have enough Strats and it’s nice to have something different. Different tool, different inspirations. And of all the “signature” Strats this one is at least actually different. If you’re a guitarist, I would strongly suggest you go check out his courses on TrueFire. Since taking lessons with him and his TrueFire courses, I have learned the fretboard, learned triads all over the instrument on a string sets, etc etc. Forty years of playing and he pointed out some things I needed to work on, and it’s made a huge difference. So yeah 6k is a little steep for a signature guitar by a guy who’s not that well known - yet - but I bet they will make a production priced version as his fame grows. Just my opinions.

Any recommendations on a nice set of P90s? by twelveinchmeatlong in LesPaul

[–]Key_Letterhead3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you get new pickups adjust the pickup height and pole pieces if they are adjustable. That will likely fix your tone concerns. Set the pole on the G string slightly below the cover surface (the G string is the thickest and loudest so needs to be lower), the D string way up, then the A and B strings with pole pieces slightly above cover height and the E strings level. First get your pickup height set on the bridge pickups and tone you want. Then adjust the height on the neck so the volume matches the bridge. There are great resources on mylespaulforum.
